Hello all, I am new here.
I am researching the Riddle family of Pulaski County, Missouri.
I have my ggg-grandfather (Andrew Jackson Riddle) and his mother (Malinda) living in Pulaski County, Missouri in 1850. He appears to have been born about 1843 and she about 1819.
They are said to be of Cherokee blood and my mother claims that the rolls show them being connected to friends or members of Doublehead’s group.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks,
Brandon
August 10, 2005 at 5:00 pm #15871I have read another post discussing “Indian” Moses Riddle, William Riddle, and Isaac Riddle.
I have an Isaac Riddle on my side as well, maybe there is a connection there as well…
The 1840 Pulaski Co., MO Census shows these individuals there:
Most are said to have been born in Tennessee, one of them was born in Virginia.
Richard Riddle – born 1780 to 1790 in ?
Emanuel Riddle – born 1810 to 1820 in ?
Jesse Riddle – born 1814/1815 in NC (married to Narcissa from KY)
Isaac Riddle – born 1811/1812 in TN (married to Margaret from TN)
Abner Riddle – ?
Hiram Riddles – born 1810 to 1820 in ?
The first relative that I can prove is relation to me shows up in the 1850 Pulaski Co., MO Census and her name is Malinda Riddle, she is listed as the head of household, so maybe was a widow? I really need to find out who she was married to…
Malinda Riddle – born 1818/1819 in TN
John C. Riddle – born 1828/1829 in TN
August 10, 2005 at 5:00 pm #15877Ok, I found more information that may connect to my side of the Riddles.
From http://www.jimcal.com/v04is01.htm
page 6 & 7
William Riddle m. Happy Riddle
They had 8 known children:
1) (Moses?) Riddle – hanged in Wilkesboro, Wilkes Co., NC with his dad
2) James Riddle – went to Cumberland Co., KY, he may have died there, in MO, or IL – his children were James, George, and others…
3) John Riddle- married Sary (Sara) Johnson (daughter of Moses Johnson) Went to Bledsoe Co., TN and then on to Pulaski Co., MO. Died in 1833 and had at least 6 children
4) Joseph Riddle – m. Rhoda Monk, dau. of Shadrack Monk and Polly Roberts. Went to Cumberland County, KY and died in 1856. A number of children.
5) Isaac Riddle – b. Hawkins Co., TN, moved to Pendleton Co., KY 1805, to Boone Co., KY 1814, to Texas in 1843/1845. d. 1861 in Titus County, Texas. Twelve children.
6) Thomas Riddle – moved to Bledsoe Co., TN, m. Mary Igou and Delilah Burks, d. 1859, Bradley Co., TN. Had at least 10 children.
7) Happy Riddle Jr. – married Henry Fisher 1799, Russell Co., VA. Had eleven children.
8) William Riddle – in 1830 Wm. Riddle was living in Whitley Co., TN, married to Ellen Choat, with several children. In 1850 he was living in Bradley Co., TN where he died.
There is a good chance that there is a connection with John Riddle who moved to Pulaski County, MO.
Can anyone tell me the names of John Riddle’s children?

August 10, 2005 at 5:00 pm #15934Thanks for the help.
In talking with Mary Hill I have determined that Emanuel and Malinda (West) are indeed my gggg-grandparents. I now have my family traced directly to William Riddle.
I’d like to know more about him. I am sure there is plenty of information to be found.
I have found that they were not Cherokee either. All of the rolls I have found show Riddle (not necessarily these Riddles) as being associated with the Choctaw. The picture I have of my gg-grandma shows her to be undeniably Indian.
Would you care to elaborate on the Indian side of the William Riddle’s family?
August 10, 2005 at 5:00 pm #15935use the “search” button on the upper right for “moses riddle” and “cornelius roberts”.
These two families lived in an area of southern Virginia in the 1760s where Eastern Sioux people and remnants of several other people lived.
