I just found a Moses Riddle on the Native American Data Base. Credit belongs to the staff of SW National Archives who compiled names from the Dawes Enrollment Cards. He is listed as Choctaw, could this be our Moses Riddle?
April 30, 2007 at 4:26 am #26721The Dawes Rolls were complied over a century after Moses Riddle was hanged, so I’d think this isn’t the same Moses Riddle.
April 30, 2007 at 4:26 am #26743Hello Bill…thank you for clarifying the “Indian” vs “Cherokee” tax listing for Moses in year 1767. As to the 1740 Tax listing…I have not viewed that listing but have it as a “factual data of interest” in my FTM , sourced from 3 PAF/forum quearies…I do not have access to VA tax rolls personally but one source (descendant) note shows as follows:
“William Riddle’s father was Moses Riddle that was listed as a Cherokee in one of the 1740 tax roll. ” Source URL: http://genforum.com/riddles/messages/84.html
IF indeed Moses was taxed as MU or IN in that tax year…I would indeed think that he was taxed in VA (specific location UNK to me at this juncture) because his son William was born in that same year…some sources indicate Wm. Thomas was born in VA and others indicate Carolina County, VA. By the time year 1842 came around and his dau. Sarah was born, they were apparently in Lewis County, VA. (She having MD William Nichols.) Hope this helps to some measure…please advise if you locate this 1740 taxation record…thanks much in advance~~~Laurie

There is no “1740 Va Tax” listing for Moses Riddle that anyone has ever found.

I have seen this referenced several times. I think someone posted it online and it has been copied over and over.
I have yet to find the source myself.

Hi Charlie,
It sounds like we are cousins.
BTW, the Moses Riddle in the Dawes Enrollment is not our Moses Riddle.
If you really want some good detailed info on the Riddle’s, get Mary E.V. Hill’s book on William Thomas Riddle, who is thought to be the son of Moses and Mary Riddle. Pat Spurlock Elder’s book is a good source too.
