July 21, 2005 at 4:35 pm #15629Thanks for this post. I wonder if Robert Hicks could be one of my ancestors. My gg grandmother was Amanda J(ane) Hicks married to my gg grandfather Samuel Winston. Her mother and father were Martha Jane Collins and Chesley Hicks. All were in Person Co. NC. I have not been able to find anything further back yet. But I will save this information. Do you know if this Hicks line is posted somewhere? Thanks! Roberta

July 21, 2005 at 4:35 pm #15673Sue, Thanks for your continued information on the Hicks. I am making copies. (I had written a long response yesterday and my computer crashed before I finished.) The Jane Hicks who married a Daniel and had a son name Chesley is intriguing. I don’t know if there is a connection yet either, but Chesley is not a common name. Jane is a common name in the family I have found and I did find a Daniel Hicks in the early 1800s–that is part of what I lost yesterday and did not have it recorded except in my post back to you–so I must look again. A good lesson! I still have not found Chesley past 1850, but I am not through searching. I trust that a connection will unfold one of these days. They cannot be a family in isolation. But the Winstons are as hard to find. Perhaps, it is just my neophyte status. Thanks for your help. Roberta
July 21, 2005 at 4:35 pm #15677Just a thought here, but “Chesley”, a surname, is also found as “Chestley”, “Chestly”, “Chesney”, “Chesnie” and a couple more variations of dropping or adding ending consonants and vowels.

July 21, 2005 at 4:35 pm #15678Interesting to see Brashears in Granville Co., NC. We have some Boorshears allegedly arriving in NY in 1713. I’ve heard of southern branches of this name (French Hugeonots) and wondered if the earlier research in our family was accurate. This elder researcher was the daughter of the Matriarch of the family who forbade any mention of Indian blood, so I’m always a tad skeptical of her data. Anybody know anything more about these Brashears?
July 21, 2005 at 4:35 pm #15688Linda,
See this Orange co NC 1755 Tax roll?
Several male Brashear names.
Several Brashear males were in Md earlier on…Robert Brashear born 1646 Calvert co MD, Samuel Brashear born 1673 Calvert co Md, died Prince George co MD married Ann Jones..father William Jones…an Elizabeth Brashear born in Ann Arundel Md 1654…found this trying to find more on Elizabeth Brashear who married Nathaniel Hicks…wouldn’t be surprised if one of the Brashear males on this tax roll 1755 was her father….don’t know for sure…

July 21, 2005 at 4:35 pm #15689Thanks, Bill. I even found Chesley Hicks listed as Chiley Hicks in the 1850 census. But I had not considered that Chesley could have been a surname earlier. That might be something to be alert for in this search. Thanks, Roberta
