I am still doing reasearch on my Native American grandmother(GGG grand). I have hit a stone wall. The problem we are running into is locating her parents. I first find her in the 1860 Orange County NC census living with a Allen and Elizabeth Collins. Also there are several different people living in that household ant differnt years. The next time we pick her up is 1880 same County married to my grandfather Frank Harris. We have their marriage certificate and it lists her parents as unknown. We know she is Native because of her picture and how the census lists her as mulatto. Take a peek at my avatar and you will see what she looks like. We can’t seem to find her as a child on any census records. We do know her maiden name was Sallie Ray. Has any one come across any native Ray families in the area??

March 8, 2009 at 12:37 am #33378Thank you so much Grey Dove I will take a look. I was getting worried 🙂 Our family has a gut feeling that she was Occaneechi. She also had some her children in Clarksville VA. Thats (Clarksville) where we have had our family reunion for the past 70 years alternating with Orange County NC each other year. My cousin already tried contacting OSBN years ago and got negative results. I am not on here to bash them but it was a little controversial to say the least.
March 8, 2009 at 12:37 am #33385You’re welcome. I found this~might be worth cking into~~
Mf. 992 — Ray Family Genealogical Data. Orange County, NC, 1736-1987. 4 vols. TSLA. 1 reel. 16 mm. Microfilm Only Collection
The records of the Ray family of Orange County, North Carolina, consist of genealogical data including material such as census records, indices to deeds, correspondence from genealogists to M. B. Ray, and family group sheets.
This came from~~ http://www.tennessee.gov/tsla/history/manuscripts/mguide10.htm ~scroll down almost to the bottom~ If I run across anything more~I’ll post~this case kinda facinates me as I have had similar situations in some of my research, but, as you know, when there is NA Indian ancestry~records are hard to come by~ our Indian ancestors sure blended into history, I know it was mostly about survival. Happy Hunting:)~Greydove~^~

Have you seen your surname as Rae? I have seen this name before…you may even want to search the site for it.

March 8, 2009 at 12:37 am #33401Thanks I didnt think to try Rae. When I searched Ray it only listed Black and White Rays no mulattos. I do know there was a Jim Ray who was an African who was an overseer on one of Paul Cameron’s plantations.

I brought up the variant, as I have seen it in census records in my family searches and we also have a Rae family here locally:) Good luck!

March 8, 2009 at 12:37 am #33428I know of very Indian families who were enumerated in the census as “Black” so I don’t think that’s a reason to discount any of those lines.
March 8, 2009 at 12:37 am #33587Thanks everybody for all of your help. I finally figured out a chunk of the missing info about my family. I will consult with my family members on what do next due to the fact some issues we can’t control wont be resolved any time soon. One thing for sure no matter what anybody says or try to do they can’t take my heritage away from me. This has been an eye opening journey for me. Again thanks to all that helped along the way.

AnonymousInactiveWorth S. Ray’s book Lost tribes of North Caroline… where did they go..
has all the colonialists names starting from the 1600’s. There is a Searcy map, index and alot of information passed on to him from genealogists in other states who kept old records and pooled information.
