Depending on where you live — they are not called by the same name everywhere. Anyway, those alphanumerical sequence indicators that go on the back, and often also the front, of motor vehicles. Yesterday in DC rush hour traffic, between the State Dept. and the Lincoln Memorial my wife and I were briefly behind someone in a black or midnight blue Hyundai Santa Fe SUV, with the Virginia plate/tag “SAPONY.” Wondered if that was any of you folks.
That’s a high security zone, if you do anything weird you get turned in for Suspicious Behavior. So I didn’t try to honk the secret Saponitown signal.

PS: We need more smilie choices on this forum. I participate in another forum that has lots more choices. If I had the choice, I would have chosen a laughing one like I have on the other forum.
