Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
My family comes from Rowan County, NC, and we are of Native American descent. We have a story that my great-great grandfather and his brother both spent time on a reservation. Some of the family lived in Danville, VA for a time in the late 1800’s and very early 1900’s before going to the “reservation” and we believe that it may have actually been a Native American community such as “Little Texas” or even Person County (which is closer to Danville) rather than a true reservation. One of the brothers, McConnaughey “Mack” Whitman, is actually said to be buried on the “reservation.” Just wondering if anyone has ever come across a “Whitman” grave in the cemeteries of either community. We know that he died January 15, 1917 (born May 1859), we just don’t know where he is buried. Thanks, Andy Whitman
Here is a photo of him:
This is his brother, John Ross Shelton Whitman, who is my great great grandfather:
They also had another brother named Milton Alby Whitman, who family stories say was considered to be a medicine man.
