Hello all. I just found this forum, what a great bunch of people & wealth of information!
I have recently begun a genealogy project and to be honest am a little overwhelmed by it all. While I have been pretty successful in compiling information on the initial branch I have begun (thanks to the research of those that went before me), I am particularly interested in a specific relative who according to family history was a Blackfoot Indian. This is according to family legend, but not any hard facts.
Her name was Rutha Terry and she was born in approximately 1828 in Floyd County, KY. She married my great-great-great grandfather William M Fyffe on 03-13-1851. This is the only information I have been able to find.
Is the surname Terry connected in any way with the Blackfoot? I am VERY new to this, and any information at all would be a great help.
Thanks!
Kim

Welcome to the forum. I tried the search function on this forum (upper right hand button) and called up oodles of hits on “Terry.” I don’t have time to look at them, but I might suggest that you try the search.
Maybe if you post more information on your line, you will find names that others have on this forum that have the Blackfoot legend in the family. My Blackfoot ancestor’s surname was McLane.

February 22, 2006 at 7:02 pm #19335I can’t tell you about Terry, but I can tell you I’ve heard “Floyd County, KY” in this connection (Blackfoot ID) many a time. It’s a veritable hotbed. Welcome, stick around and hit that search button. Let us know what you find.
February 22, 2006 at 7:02 pm #19343Hi, Kim,
Rutha Terry m’d William “Fiffe”, 13 Mar 1851 in Lawrence Co., Ky (per Co. Marr. Rec) , which was created from a part of Floyd Co in 1822.
1850 Lawrence Co., Ky Census; 31 July; p.59A;
Family # 110:
Miles TERRY, 60, m, – , Farmer, $600, Va.
Nancy………, 58, f, – , Va.
RUTHA…….., 22, f, – , Ky.*******
Wm…………, 17, m, – , Ky.
James HILL, 20, m, – , Ky.
…………………………………….
Miles Terry m’d Nancy Skaggs 28 Sep 1812, Prestonsburg, Floyd Co., Ky; daughter of Peter Skaggs & Martha/Marthey Cohun (Calhoun? ).
Martha, b.abt. 1771 Wilkes Co., NC, is reportedly of Native descent but the association should be questioned because there’s more to this than first meets the eye. Peter Skaggs’s father Zachariah (wife Nancy Wilcox) and many of Peter’s brothers are listed on the 1787 Tax List for Russell Co., Va, living amongst some of this Forum’s “famous” people.

February 22, 2006 at 7:02 pm #19367Which “famous” people are you referring to?
February 22, 2006 at 7:02 pm #19371“Famous” as in interconnected with people of ‘Blackfoot’ I.D. ‘s whose many descendants have posted here.
February 22, 2006 at 7:02 pm #19386I am new at this, there is some great information in the Mormon
Church concerning the natives here, my daughter is half Haliwa-Saponi and she has done her family history on her father’s side of the family with the Mormon’s Genealogy Records. A beautiful job she has done on the Richardsons, and Hedgepeths,
and Sills.
February 22, 2006 at 7:02 pm #19416Thank you all for your tips and advice. I’ve already used the search function and there’s so much to sift through! Thank you, Bill, for your detailed info, that helps a lot.

February 22, 2006 at 7:02 pm #24206Long Time No Post. Ha Ha My old PC gave out some time ago so I lost some things as far as log-in information goes. So I just re-activated my accounts.
Actually, the name stated on the marriage bond is “Cohun”, which is actually a surname, I don’t know as to why that is being debated now. I suppose to make it sound like “Cothron” since no one likes to admit being duped. Defintiely not Patrick for a surname though.
Anyway, I saw the names listed on the tax list for Scaggs (Skaggs), but similar names of Longhunter Skaggs, and I assume descendants, do appear on the Cherokee Dawes Rolls as well. It may be another one where my ancestors possibly had NA blood before the known marriage to NA’s happened. Interesting thread either way.

February 22, 2006 at 7:02 pm #24469Does any one know anything about Bowles, Bryants, Ewers or Jordans (pronounced “Jerdan”) in Buckingham, Nelson, Amherst Co.s, VA? My Gread grandmother said her mother was “Blackfoot”. They seem to have moved to Buckingham County sometime after 1830 and to Amherst sometime before The War. All the above family names plus Christian, North and Rice seem to have intermarried and moved together.
