Hi Everyone,
I am new to the site and I wanted to say thanks for letting me join. I am searching for information on my great-great grandmother. Her maiden name was Sallie Bostick. I’m not sure of the spelling. I haven’t been able to find anything on the web about her with that name. My great uncle just told me her name, but he wasn’t sure how to spell it either. She was supposedly a member of the Blackfoot tribe from North Carolina. She lived in Hahira Georgia for a time. She eventually married Mitchel Weldon. I found them in the 1900 census living in Militia district 658, Lower Fork, Lowndes, Georgia. They had 4 children, Howard, Remer, Bessie and Nellie. Bessie would be my great grandmother. Sallie is listed in the census as white so I wasn’t sure how they listed Native Americans at that time. We have pictures of her and she definitly looks Native American. The family eventually moved to Charleston, SC. Howard and Remer settled in Plant City, Florida. She was born in June 1867 and married around 1890. Any information you have would be much appreciated.
July 1, 2009 at 6:59 pm #33935Hi Anne, welcome to Saponitown!
I am a Weldon descendent, my family hails from Richmond, Jasper, Spalding, and Columbia Counties in Georgia. If your Weldons are from these counties, then perhaps we are cousins. Post what else you know about them and I will get back to you later next week when I’m home. They do have native ancestry.
July 1, 2009 at 6:59 pm #33938Hi Spilleddi.
I’m so excited to get a reply so fast! I think my Weldon’s are from Lowndes County. I don’t know much about Georgia so I don’t even know where that is. My grandfather always told us he was from Valdosta and my great-great grandmother Sallie Bostick was from Hahira which is about 7 miles from Valdosta. Some places I find the Weldon’s spelled with an o and sometimes it is spelled Welden. I know that Mitchel Weldon married Sallie Bostick on Jan 5, 1890. Mitchel’s parents were J.J. and Rebecca Welden. His brothers and sisters were Sarah, Oren, Isaac, Moses and John. I can’t find much about Sallie Bostick and she is the one I believe to be Native American.
Thanks for your help.
July 1, 2009 at 6:59 pm #33940Welcome Anne,
Have you tried looking for Bostick spelled Bostwick? I have seen it spelled both ways. Mine appears to be located in Wilkes, Morgan co. Some of their descendants being in Jasper, Covinton and Newton Ga.

Thanks for the tip. I searched Bostwick and I think I found her. I came across W.G. Bostwick, wife Nancy, children Lucy, Nancy, Henry, Robert, Sallie and Mollie. They are all from Lower Fork, Lowndes, GA. Are they related to any of your Bostwicks?

July 1, 2009 at 6:59 pm #33942Glad the tip worked for you. Just went thru my notes. I don’t think there is any relation. Do you know what W G stands for?
July 1, 2009 at 6:59 pm #33944I do not know what W.G. stands for. None of his children have names starting with either letter so I can’t even make assumptions based on that. I haven’t paid to join any search web sites. Everything I’ve found out so far is in the free records online. Maybe if I pay to join a site, I can get more detailed information.
July 1, 2009 at 6:59 pm #33951Sallie is listed in the census as white so I wasn’t sure how they listed Native Americans at that time.
Generally, especially in the south, only two races were recognized. It seems that in the Upper South an Indian looking person might be enumerated as black or mullatto, more often than further west. My impression is that the further west you go the more likely someone with an Indian appearance would be listed as white. The one that’s rare is to see a Indian looking person listed as Indian, so don’t be thrown by that.
July 1, 2009 at 6:59 pm #33967Thanks, Linda. I was pretty sure the information I was finding was accurate, but that did throw me a little.
July 1, 2009 at 6:59 pm #33974Hi Anne,
I’m descent from Martha Weldon, b. 1813 Jasper Co Georgia, daughter of William Weldon, b 1770 Jasper co Ga, son of Isaac Weldon, b 1745 in North Carolina, son of Jacob Weldon. Isaac, Moses, and John are common given names in my family, and branches of them moved all over Georgia. They also spelt the name Welden.
William and Isaac were Indian traders, lived in Creek territory after coming to Georgia and were friends with the lower Creek Chief MacIntosh. They were also members of a synagogue in Georgia. There are stories in my family that this lineage is part Cherokee, but I’m inclined to think Creek. There are Weldons on the Creek rolls, but I haven’t found any that are Cherokee.
I’ve been wondering if they also traded with Indians in North Carolina prior to moving to Georgia in the mid 1700’s.
July 1, 2009 at 6:59 pm #35481Robert is my great grandfather, his father is Washington George Bostick.
