Hello group. I am happy to be in this forum although I have not been able to document my family yet. I am Cherokee, Creek and Blackfoot – I guess Saponi from what I have been learning. This line of my family is the HUDSON’s, Quarley and Eunice, children: Georgiana (ggrandmother) et al. Quarley moved to Chetopa, KS in 1879 in the Exodus from Texas from San Augustine. This is the only information I have. If anyone out there thinks s/he might be related, please reply to my posting. Also, I would like to know if there is any online documentation, rolls etc. of the Saponi. Thank you very much.

I am from Mecklenburg Co. the orginal home of the Occaneechi. There are Hudsons’ there that I am sure have Indian heritage. Some of them may have struck out for Texas at some point. This was quite common. Though I don’t recall seeing this name in the free people of color book this does not mean much since many Indians were slaves. I met a man from California last week whose Texas Saponi came by way of Ohio from Southside VA.
April 19, 2001 at 4:56 am #5059Thanks for replying. What and where online is the Free People of Color Book? I haven’t come across many Hudsons and I distinctly remember my grandmother who still lives near Chetopa say that her grandfather wouldn’t talk about the family history much – that it wasn’t something children would inquire of. I found out her maiden name and grandfather’s birthplace/migration on accident from a local museum there! There are several Hudson’s on the indexed obit page. They separated that info by color of person and it paid off some. Another person, not a Hudson, was born a slave in Richmond, VA and went to Grimes County, TX before the 1879 Exodus. I just wonder how many of these people were cousins, neighbors, etc. And could I draw some conclusions that my family might have originated in Virginia based on the histories of others migrating along with them? I realize that true researchers do not do this but I have nothing else. Thanks Barry.
