I was thinking heavily about this paticular subject yesterday. This is the indian country issues board, there are alot of deep rooted meaningful postings but no one has brought up the issues of Sobriety amongst our people and what we can do to support them. Juan and I talked alot about this and He said that it is a hard subject to talk about with out seeming like you are pushing your views on other people. I do not want to push my views on anybody I just want to support and promote the sobriety of all my brotheres and sisters. I think it is something to consider as a dicussion on the board. No judgements here folks, only support we all have things we struggle with. Me personnally I have now been Sober for 3 years I have fallen and gotten back up, the Drum is my rock and support. It is not easy being in your 20’s and choosing to be sober when your friends and family find it perfectly acceptable to drink or do drugs. It is not easy at any age when batteling with addiction.
One of my biggest reasons I quit other than singing with the drum and trying to live in a good way was because My NDN Grandfather batteld & Father is batteling with Alcaholism he did not teach or pass any teachings down to his Children just mentions of Pow WOws and bit stories. I put part of the responsability of so many of us losing our traditions and history on Alcahol and I do not want to see our children go through the same thing. I do this for my Grandpa, ANcestors and for You because I Love, Respect & Care for all of those things. Like the commercial says what is your anti drug?

May 9, 2002 at 1:39 pm #6084Dear Mr. Spatino,
You should be proud of yourself for being sober. Yes you may be tempted, but you just need to realize one thing, it takes more courage not to drink. I don’t drink, but I smoke cigarettes. I hate smoking, but can’t seem to quit.Just remember that you can have a good time without drinking, as I always have. Take care & I wish you good luck!
Sincerely,
CoheeLady
