I am looking for further information that may link my line of Stodghill family to that of James Stodghill in Orange County, VA at Swift Run.
Here is what I have to work with on this family line of mine.
Mahala Stodghill born Dec.1838 Wayne County, KY married Granville Johnson on May 26, 1856 Galen Greenberry was surety. Mahala was the daughter of Reubin Stodghill per Pulaski County, KY marriage records.
Mahala’s sister Isabella married Dickerson Thompson.
March 9, 2007 at 1:08 am #25292Granvill Johnson’s first name was James per the 1850 Wayne Co., Ky Census.
Reuben Stodghill first shows up in 1820 Franklin Co., Ky, living next door to Jacob Stodghill, who is probably his father.
As a reference point, the state capitol Frankfort is in Franklin Co.
Jacob Stogdhill, 1800 Franklin Co., Ky Tax List (date of 8-7-1801)
1810 Franklin Co., Ky Census, p.167
Jacob Stodghill = 01010-11011-0-0.
1 male 10 to 15.
1 male 26 to 44.
1 female under 10.
1 female 10 to 15.
1 female 26 to 44.
1 female 45 or over.
0 others
0 slaves.
There is a John Stodghill on the 1810 Shelby Co., Ky Census, p.232, born between 1766 and 1784, but he’s not there in 1820 and I didn’t find him after 1810.
There are several Johns in the Orange and Essex Co., Va families, but I could not match any of them up with this one in Shelby Co.
1820 Franklin Co., Ky Census, Lawrenceburg Twp, p.94,
the ‘counts’ are too faint for certainty.
Jacob Stodghill – he may be age range 45 and over.
Reuben Stodghill, next door to Jacob
There are no Stodghill households (all spellings I could think of) in Wayne County prior to 1830.
1830 Wayne Co., Ky Census, p. 252
Jacob Stogil = 00000001-0100102
1 male 50 to 59. (born in 1770’s)
1 female 5 to 9.
1 female 20 to 29.
2 females 40 to 49.
In 1830 Wayne, next door to Jacob, is:
Reubin Stogil = 01001-321001.
1 male 5 to 9.
1 male 20 to 29.
3 females under 5.
2 females 5 to 9.
1 female 10 to 14.
1 female 30 to 39.
1840 Wayne Co., Ky Census,
p.147: Jacob Stogill = 000001001-000101001.
1 male 20 to 29.
1 male 60 to 69.
1 female 15 to 19.
1 female 30 to 39.
1 female 60 to 69.
p.154: Reuben Stogill = 0001001-2222101.
1 male 15 to 19.
1 male 40 to 49.
2 females under 5.
2 females 5 to 9.
2 females 10 to 14.
2 females 15 to 19.
1 female 20 to 29.
1 female 40 to 49.
Jacob is not found on the 1850 census.
Reubin (b.abt.1798 Ky – probably Franklin Co) and family are on the 1850, 1860 & 1870 Wayne Co., Ky and Reubin and Nancy are not found on the 1880 census.
Reubin’s wife Nancy, b.abt. 1797 VA, per 1850 Wayne Co Census, is alledged to be either a Higginbotham or a Collins. There are no Higginbothams in this area of north central Ky in 1810 or 1820, so I think ‘Higginbotham’ is disproven.
There are 4 Collins households in Lawrenceburg Twp, Franklin Co., Ky, in the same time period Reubin was there, but I found no proof that Nancy was a Collins.
………………………………………………..
Shelby Co. is the next county west of Franklin Co., Ky, and in the Southeastern District of Shelby Co., are several Stodghill families per county marriage record indexes and census records.
Thomas “Stoghill” (b.abt. 1790) m’d Nancy Shelburn (b.abt. 1790’s) on
20 June 1810 Shelby Co., Ky, and they are still there in 1830 (census).
Thomas (born Essex Co., Va??) is purported to be the son of Joseph Stodghill, b.?, d. abt. 1812 in Shelby Co., Ky. I found no further info on Joseph. The Orange and related Essex Co., Va Stodghills don’t have any of these names, or Jacob or Reubin, in their trees and none of them appear to have been in Ky this early. I was unable to match any of them on the 1780s & 1790 Virginia Tax Lists with the KY group.
Polly “Stodgel” m’d James Evans on 2 June 1812, Shelby Co., Ky.
Samuel Stodghill m’d Elizabeth West on 11 April 1812 in Franklin Co., Ky, and he may or may not be the same Samuel on the 1789 Madison Co., Ky Tax List.
Catherine Stodghill m’d Abraham Jemison on 18 Jan 1815, Franklin Co., Ky.

March 9, 2007 at 1:08 am #25295Thanks Bill, I had been looking in the West Virginia vacinity for the Stodghill/Sturgeons back when I was working on this line.
From a previous post I did some time ago on the Collins Family Thread: The Thompson lines look as if they have been searched out pretty well, but I still need to review the work done to see where it goes. I recently found some interesting information for the Stodghill surname. For a while I and many others were not sure how this last name should be spelled. It looks as if the last name is supposed to be spelled Stodghill, but is known as Sturgeon in the Clinch areas of West Virginia. I will post those links.

I saw the Orange County, VA line on Swift Run area and wondered about them. Your help is greatly appreciated.
March 9, 2007 at 1:08 am #25664Lyman Reynolds book on the Thompson family mentions Higgenbothams in Wayne Co. about 1800-1810. I can’t lay my hands on the book right now but it seems like he mentions a Moses and Polly Higgenbotham.
