My Mom had a stroke 3 weeks ago. The type was Broca’s Aphesia. It has been touch and go. She was making some improvement until she gave up the will to live. Then she refused to eat for 2 weeks and almost checked out Fri afternoon. She is now on IV fluids and fighting bilateral pneumonia. I’ll be around but won’t be able to help anyone with research and may not be logging in.

November 1, 2015 at 5:02 pm #37804So sorry for your your Moms troubles. I pray she recovers and your family strength and healing.
November 1, 2015 at 5:02 pm #37806Thanks for all the good wishes. The antibiotics seem to be working on the pneumonia and her will to live is more evident. Getting her to eat is still a problem. I go every day at lunch and Becky stops for supper on her way home from work. We coax her to eat as much as we can.
I have been playing CDs for her when I go to feed her lunch. The first time I took Lewis Family Favorite Hymns. I quickly learned that I need to prescreen what I play for her. Too many of those bluegrass and traditional gospel songs are not just pining for heaven but they want to go right now! In her present state of mind, she doesn’t need stuff like “softly and tenderly Jesus is calling. Ye who are weary come home…..”
Black gospel is more a celebration of life and thankfulness to the lord…. much more upbeat.
Today I took Children’s Bible Songs. (Jesus loves me… little sunbeam…. deep and wide….. etc) Pretty safe although “Higher ground” and “Bound for the Promised Land” were iffy…. 😉
November 1, 2015 at 5:02 pm #37811Aww. Glad to hear she doing better. Great idea to bring worship in to lift her spirit. Bless you all.
November 1, 2015 at 5:02 pm #37813Gave her a dose of Elvis Gospel today at lunch;-) Becky and I were singing along and she was chewing fork after forkful of her lunch and keeping time with the index finger of her right hand (the weak side).
With this type of stroke, music is supposed to be beneficial. She seems to be responding well.
November 1, 2015 at 5:02 pm #37814Continuing hope for you. My mother-in-law had a stroke several weeks ago. She went through some intensive therapy in the hospital and then in a nursing home. It was the first time she and my 91 year old father-in-law had been apart. They are back together again in their apartment. Eating was an issue for her too, but no one ever mentioned music. Lots of recordings of her son and grandson, though that could be used if we need them in the future :).
Hope she continues doing well.

November 1, 2015 at 5:02 pm #37815Aroma therapy is good as well Dreaminghawk. For ease of pains, we used to use scented candles or flowers. For encouraging eating the smell of bread or cookies helped. Sometimes a little chocolate can go a long way too. For alertness we used peppermint oil on cotton balls around the house and a little DOES go a long way with that! Warm colours can help too. Like on a throw blanket or soft slippers. Being positive no matter the situation is key. The thing about strokes is 99% of the time, they know everything going on around them even if they cant get the thoughts and words out to let you know. Sadly, its liked being trapped in your brain. Just keep doing what you are doing!

November 1, 2015 at 5:02 pm #37884Just letting folks know that I’m still around and so is my Mom. She is in yoyo phase. Her mind is very confused although she still knows who I am. She may be alert or not from day to day. Eating jusst enough to survive.
November 1, 2015 at 5:02 pm #37885Sending prayers Dreaminghawk. I am glad you and she are still with us.
