What is the specific relationship between the people whose names you’ve listed, it will help me locate them for you –
for example, do you know who Caroline Carson married?

October 28, 2005 at 1:54 am #17251I know that Black people of Lynchburg called Caddie a squaw. I remember the older people used to call me great grandchild of that squaw woman. CAddie supposedly took up with a Gordon from VA, but had had her first son by another while in Mississippi. I believe she had 5 children. I am restling with how to know which of the eight VA tribes I might be a part of. My closest link may be my paternal grandfather who said that his father was a part of an Indian mission in the mountains. My grandfather was born in Elon, came down to Lynchburg and became a postal carrier and emmersed himself in the Black community because he was so reddish brown. TO my knowledge Black in Lynchburg were only permitted to go to normal schools and to Seminary. My grandfather was educated with “his own people” what ever that means. I was thinking that there should be a list of names of the children educated at the Mission school. I’d like to reasearch it further.

October 28, 2005 at 1:54 am #17292Bill,
Does the census indicate what ethnicity they were listed as?
Deirdre
October 28, 2005 at 1:54 am #17295Deirdre,
I’ve edited the above posts and added ‘race’ for each person as it was listed on the census. That changed over time.
“B” is Black and “Mu” is Mulatto.
I’ve added 1900 census info into the 6th post.

October 28, 2005 at 1:54 am #17296The mention of an “Indian Mission” raises a couple possibilities. The Monacan Indians of Amherst Co had a Mission in their settlement on Bear Mt. run by the Episcopalians beginning in the late 1800’s, as I recall, altho’ Gordon and Carson are not names I would generally associate with that community.
The Mormons also conducted Missionary work in the Amherst Co. area in the late early 1900s, and founded several churches among the Indian descendants in the region. Dr. Jay Vest, a Monacan Indian teaching at UNC-Pembroke had some family associated with that community, so he might be a source for a possible lead.
October 28, 2005 at 1:54 am #17304I have a great great great grandmother whose name was Lucinda Fuller (Smith maiden name) and her twin sister name was Mariah Harris. Lucinda Fuller died in 1967 and I was told that her twin sister died before her. They were from Mecklenburg County, Virginia.
I am not sure if they were Black Indians or just African Americans, but I was told that Lucinda Fuller was born into slavery in 1863.
