The Howard, Wood, Frye, Slaughter, Goins, Jackson and Waller families all had native american admixture. I’m looking for any family that has ties to any of these families located in Albemarle County, Virginia, the Shenandoah Valley and West Virginia. The Barbour family is also a family of interest.
May 5, 2010 at 7:02 am #34921Goins is one of the most common names around here, most of the others I’ve heard here. Have you tried using the forum’s search feature?
May 5, 2010 at 7:02 am #34922I’ve started using the search feature with the surname Howard, haven’t had much luck finding anything. I’ve seen a Groves Howard, not sure if he is connected or not. The Howard family from my area moved around so much, I’ve seen Howard’s born in in Albemarle County, Virginia out in Tennessee, KY ,Louisiana, Montana, WV, NC, SC, Maryland and DC. I’ve also seen where they go back and forth from Virginia to WV, Ohio, NC, and SC. It seems that a lot of the time you could find the Howard’s near the Goins, Collins and a few other families. From what I’ve found most of these families were listed as mullato, even the family members listed as negro often turn out be Native American or more Native American. What and who are some of the best sources of information on the Saponi town site. LOL. There is so much for me to learn and I haven’t even really started on the other families I’m connected to. This is indeed a great site, thanks to all of those who put a lot of hard work and effort into creating this
May 5, 2010 at 7:02 am #34929Hi!
I don’t know that our Howard families connect or not. The Groves Howard you mentioned married Hannah Allen and a Francis Howard married Ann Allen. Sisters. Ann and Hannah are children of the William Allen and Frances Grant, the same William Allen I just mentioned in the Goins thread. This Howard family was in York co Va and then Granville NC. This group of Howards intermarry with the Hunt families also. Groves Howard is one of the names on a petition in Granville trying to not have to list free persons of color which was rejected. 1771? Would have to find it. Will see in time if we do connect. Saj

My husband’s family came from England but they did for sure inter marry with the cherokee, one in mind is Thomas Howard who married Letty Durham-Hacket Gray, and their son also Thomas Howard who married Francis Jackson, both of these women came from NC. Several relatioons of his are supposed to have registered through Letty Durham. I have not seen the documentation so I cannot say this for sure. Also my maiden name is WALLEN and during my research of the Wallen lineage I do know that there are variatiions of the WALLeN name ; Wallen/Walling/Wallin/Walton/WWalters/Walden/Waller and i also know that there is for sure native american blood mixed in there too. I am just not too sure where it starts. I just thought I would say some thing about this, just shooting the breeze.

I found Thomas Howard born June 5th 1770 Wilkes, GA ( maybe that’s a mistake and it’s in WilkesCo., NC)?
Died January 27th 1850 Morgan Co., KY.
Married #1 c. 1794 ( probably in Russell Co., VA) to Frances Jackson.

May 5, 2010 at 7:02 am #34947Yes this is my husband’s family on his father’s side of the family. His mother was also a Howard probably related distantly. I have hit brick wall with her side of the family. Her family was in Morgan county Ky too. Some in Elliott county. But Thomas Howard who married Francis Jackson- Francis being full blood cherokee some one told me , but Thomas’ parents were Thomas Howard and Letty Durham- Letty was full blooded cherokee indian name Hacket Gray, gray
May 5, 2010 at 7:02 am #34948I live in Magoffin county Ky and there are alot of those names used here. I also found out today that I am also from the Bunch family lineage-Ann Bunch married William Blevins. Mary Blevins married Elisha Wallen/walling.

This is a link to the photo of Morgan Howard who has the same name as my missing great-grandfather, Morgan Gene Howard b. Rowan, NC 1831 who went missing after taking a wagonload of tobacco South in 1880. Also a PDF link to Howards with Groves and an Isabelle , etc.See page 28. Allen/Allin also.
I’ve been searching for his father’s first name. Both parents were Howards . Mother Rachel Howard.
( her parents were Christopher Howard and Rachel Howard ( cousins).
