Looking for more information on QUALLS, DAVIS, & HARDY Surnames from the Halifax County, NC area.
My Great-Grandfather Junious Justice (JJ) QUALLS (b. 1870 in Halifax County, Brinkleyville Township, NC) was the son of an English/White Landowner (J. Bynum Qualls) & a Native American/Saponi woman (Lucindie Davis).
As was the law in NC in those times, Junious and his brothers Willie, Wesley, & sister Gertrude were originally raised with their Indian mother’s last name (Davis), as Whites could not marry Native Americans or Blacks. J. Bynum Qualls eventually adopted his children through the court system, changed their last names to QUALLS, and registered them as “White”.
As I have researched it, the QUALLS themselves were White with Cherokee blood who migrated to Halifax County from Eastern Tennessee.
My Grandfather, Ollie QUALLS, is the son of Junious Justice (JJ) Qualls & Sarah HARDY (1/2 Black & 1/2 Indian)… He is one of 24+ children fathered by JUNIOUS J. QUALLS.

I just wanted to welcome you to Saponitown. I can see from today’s postings that you are already using the search function to find threads related to your surnames. I’m in Person Co, NC, just across the border from Halifax co, VA. and we have many Davis’s here. Most all have a family tradition of having ndn blood.
While Saponitown is not as active as it once was, there is a wealth of info in the archives. I consider it the foremost website for finding the truth about eastern mixed bloods with roots in VA and NC. The history section has links to virtually all the early writings that concern eastern ndns.
Thanks for joining. Keep posting and maybe we can bring this community back to life.

I have read a lot about the Indians of Person County… Great History… & I would love to learn more…
In the late 1800’s I believe there was a custody battle between Bynum Davis (Lucindie’s Uncle) & J. Bynum Qualls (my G-G Grandfather) in Halifax County for his children who at that time still carried the Davis last name (Junious Davis)… I am deducing this is the reason we have no contact with the Davis family since J. Bynum Qualls was awarded his kids and changed their names to Qualls…
Long story short, I would love to re-connect… My mother took me to a Pow-Wow as a baby… I have never been to one since… I would love to learn…

As I have been researching my maternal family connection to the Haliwa-Saponi Tribe, one of my close friends now living in DC, Shannon Richardson (Tribal Member), is helping, as much as he can, to discover our connection. I want to formally express my gratitude to him and his family.
As told to us by my Aunt Yvonne Qualls-Whitaker (oldest living child of my mothers siblings), “We are related to members of the Tribe (Haliwa-Saponi), and other tribes from our White side (Qualls). My great-grandmother Lucindie Davis was a full blood. I don’t think my great grandparents were married, but at a time, they all lived in the same house. When my great-grandfather (Bynum Qualls, b. 1829, Halifax, NC) decided to take his children away from my great grandmother (Lucindie Davis) in a custody battle, he changed the kids last name to “Qualls” and their race to White. That’s why we never had close relations to the Davis family that lives in Halifax, NC. My great-grandfather did not allow my grandfather (Junius Justice Davis-Qualls, b. 1868, Brinkleyville Township, Halifax, NC) to visit them. As my great-grandfather was awarded full custody.”

In other research I have found via Ancestry.com, prevalent intermarriages between Davis-Lynch, Davis-Richardson, Hardy-Richardson, & Davis-Silver Families exist throughout Halifax & Warren County, NC…
If anyone on this forum is a DAVIS, or knows of the DAVIS Family, I would love to find out if we are indeed kin simply lost… Thank you in advance…
