I previously posted this on another thread, but realized I most likely should have posted it here. So here goes:I am searching the Tennessee Collins and have hit a brick wall. This is my husband’s family and I have traced them back to Joshua Collins, born about 1788-1790 in North Carolina. His wife’s name was Susan. I have found a few other Joshua Collins, but with different spouses and different (but close) birth years. In 1850 and 1860 my Joshua Collins is living in Jacksboro, Campbell County, Tennessee (two counties over from Hawkins) and is listed as Mulatto in both census. I have tried to use a time line with him, but just can’t determine who his father could be. I’ve been reading about the Melungeon migration and have tried to trace the Collins from when they were in North Carolina, then Virginia and on to Tennessee. In 1820, there was a Joshua Collins in Cumberland Co. NC. In 1830 there were two Joshua Collins . . . one in Lee County, VA and one in Sullivan County, TN. In 1840, there is a Joshua Collins in Washington Co. TN. (Can anyone help me? Does anyone have any information on a Joshua with a wife named Susan, (she was born about 1807). Their children were: Mary Ann, Hannah, Louisa, Mahala (‘Haley’), Joshua, Susan, (and maybe a son – names James, not sure about him). Looking forward to any information.
Thank you,

February 7, 2007 at 1:46 am #24690Hi Anita,
While I’m looking at a couple of families prior to 1820 and in the 1840 era, here are a couple of items for you.
Cumberland County, NC Marriage Bonds:
Joshua COLLINS + Susan WOOD
on 27 April 1820
Bond # 36141
Bondsmen: Claiborn Wiggin & John Bryan
Witness: John Armstrong
1820 Cumberland Co., NC Census; p. 168:
Joshua COLLINS, 1 male FCP 26 to 44; 1 female FCP 15 to 25.
2nd door further is Jesse INGRAM, “Shoemaker”, white, 45 or older, with family (related to Mahala Collins’s husband William Ingram?? )
3rd door further is Harry WOOD (probably Susan’s father);
FCP: 3 males under 14; 1 male 45 or older; 2 females 15 to 26.
Susan would have been out of the household by the time this census was taken.
The 1810 census only lists the total people (9) in Harry Wood’s household.
This area appears to be a small community of SWEAT, OXENDINE, HAYS, DAVIS & MAINES (? or is this MAINER/MINOR ? …not real clear) people in addition to the COLLINS & WOOD noted above.
The 1830 Sullivan Co., Tn, Joshua Collins’ age and the children’s later location don’t match up so you can eliminate him.
1830 Lee Co., Va Census; Hamblen; Western District; p.298:
Joshua Collins, FPC:
1 male under 10.
1 male 24 to 35.
2 females under 10.
1 female 24 to 35.
Still looking at the 1840 Washington Co., Tn family which may be them but the geography of Lee Co, Va to Campbell Co, Tn via Washington Co., Tn, doesn’t work well, so I’ll take some time on this.

February 7, 2007 at 1:46 am #24701Anita….I do not know if you are the same person or not but I located a picture of Mahala (Collins) Ingram…will try and attach it here…teh owner of the pic is listed as a descendant of Margaret “Peggy” Collins and may be named Brandy? Her email addy is “hidden” so I’m not certain if I can even contact her…more if I locate it. *Note: there is no date nor location listed for this pic but it was most likely taken in TN as that is where Mahala died. Take care~~~Laurie

Thank you for responding and for the picture. Believe it or not, just last week I became acquainted (online) with the lady who had this picture and she just sent it via e-mail to me a couple of days ago. I’ve been looking for years for someone who might be from this line of the Collins family and/or have pictures. Then in the last two days, I found her and also found this message board with you and others who are so very nice to help me. The lady with the picture – her name is Diane, but part of her e-mail address is brandy. Are you related to this line also – or via an allied line? If so, I would love to share and compare notes. We are related through Mahala’s daughter Mary Ann ( 1862 – abt. 1932). This has been the hardest family to research that I’ve ever seen. I am so happy (lucky too) that I came across this site. I was researching the Melungeons and was led to this site. Our Collins are listed as Mulatto on several census, but my husband’s aunt says her great-great-grandaddy was part Indian. She didn’t know which Indians, but she didn’t think it was Cherokee. Now it is coming together. If I can just figure out how our Joshua Collins and Susan Wood Collins tie into the Collins lineage, it will be a dream come true. Looking forward to hearing from you again soon.

(Most NC records are public record and I will be happy to do look-ups in Buncombe, Mitchell, Yancey, McDowell, Burke and Rutherford when I am in those areas. This will include: Births and Deaths (after 1914) and Marriages.)
February 7, 2007 at 1:46 am #24740Bill,
Thank you, thank you . . . for any and all assistance with Joshua Collins. I know he fits into the migratory Collins family, just don’t know which family. My goal is to find his father. In looking at the NC Collins and using a time line in their migration, he could fit into several different ones. I feel that he came to Virginia and into TN from there, but think he came into Hawkins county going to Campbell. Just speculation however.
Thanks again
Anita
