Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
Tagged: Nancy Ann Cooksey
Greeting
I am out of Gilbert Deer (1768 Pittsylvaia to 1794/5 Pittsylvania) and Aincy Morton (1788 VA to 1826 VA) daughter Joanna Deer (1789 VA to 1865 TX).
Joanna Deer (1789 VA to 1865 TX) married Lewis Fletcher Murphy (1784 VA to 1826 IL). Their daughter Elizabeth Heydon Murphy (1814 VA to 1901 WI) was my GG Grandmother.
Grandmother Elizabeth was fond of her tobacco pipe and claimed to be a quarter Native American and the source of my families oral history of Native American ancestry.
From Elizabeth my line goes to Catherine Bryant followed by Harriet Smith to Doris Conner to Laverne Hawks to myself.
Gilbert and Thomas Johns worked together until their deaths in 1793/4.
Thanks to the posting of beeleaf I also recognized James and Joseph Dear as family members as well as John Morton.
Peace be with you as you walk gently on Mother Earth. Melvern
I am also a descendent of Nancy Ann Cooksey. Cooksey, Capps, Henderson and Graham. My people were out Buncombe, Henderson and Jackson counties of North Carolina. This line always claimed to be Cherokee. My great uncle listed Native American on his WW I papers and his self identity as a Cherokee was confirmed to me by his granddaughter years ago. The Graham line were FPOC as far back as 1785. My father’s favorite line when he was teaching me woodcraft was “This is how an Indian would….”
