Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
Before European immigrants settled in the New River Valley, this land was home to several Native American tribes including the Tutelo and Saponi people.
According to the Native Lands project, the Tutelo people ranged from as far south as Hickory, N.C., to as far north as Charleston, W.Va., primarily following the New River.
The New River played a pivotal role in the lives of the Tutelo people.

Not so sure about the accuracy of this article… supposed extinction and John Key passed in the 1800s not 1989.
