Yes some of my family are owens. That is not my direct line but my cousin did tell me that it was of native origins. There are several fractions of Pee Dee Tribes in SC. Yes they have State recognition whereas I believe one of them do not.

December 7, 2006 at 2:59 am #24158I tried doing a geneology with the tribe and I couldn’t get anyone to even call me back. I would like to attend this years Pow Wow, but I don’t know when this years event will be held.

Actually the Haliwa Saponi would not even talk to me. They said their rolls are closed. My gr grandmother is from Hollister so proof was not an issue, but not living in that community seemed to be more of the issue.
I am a member of the Cheroenhaka (Nottowway) Tribe….(on my Plummer side). I had my geno documentation and paper trail, so I decided to carry on the Cheroenhaka family traditions. I still attend many of the Haliwa Saponi events..ie culture class, Pow Wows and other events. I don’t hold anything against them they are still my lineage as well.

December 7, 2006 at 2:59 am #24159I lost contact with my father 30 years ago and all I know is his name and approxiamate age, has anyone ever visited the archives in N.C. or the Bureau of Indian Affairs for a geneology search? My fathers name is James Authur Richardson and was born in Holister, N.C. around 1923 to 1930 and mentioned belonging to the Haliwa Saponi tribe. He used to work and live in Washington D.C. in the 60’s. He has three or four sons and two daughters. The names that I have are (Lorenzo, Steven, Alfonso, Carolyn, Jerome).Any help.

Tribes have the right to close their rolls at any time that they see fit and it doesn’t necessarily mean that they don’t want certain people in the Tribe. Also Tribes have to be careful that those without Native blood are not enrolled, that might hurt the future of the Tribe. I believe in strict enrollment procedures and screening. We have to be careful.

Hello Watkins…I am not quite certain if you are looking for soem genealogical information on your birth father’s family or if you simply wish to locate him…however, I did do a wee bit of digging on his family and came up with what appears to be he, note the following:
1. There was a James Arthur Richardson b: 15 Sept 1925 in Nash Co, NC; father listed as Sam Richardson, mother as Minnie nee Evans.
2. There appears to be no SSDI on this very man…which bodes as good news…I searched for any Richardson born on that exact date so that looks promising.
3. I located a NC marriage record for a James Arthur Richardson to Polly Ann nee Anderson in Johnston Co, NC on 4 Aug 1966.
4. In re: census records: 1930 South Whitakers, Nash Co, NC page 6 of 32 shows: Samuel Richardson, age 40, negro, MD at age 21, born in NC , farmer as H of HH with wife Minnie, age 35, born NC, negro, married at age 16 and children (all indexed as negro and born in NC): Henry G (16), Estelle (11), Samuel Jr.(10), Lucille (8), Alexander (6), James (5***your father), Pinkey M (3 yrs & 8 mos), Edger (6 months). They are ND to a Jesse Richardson family…he being also indexed as negro and born in NC, age 29.
5. Backtracking census: 1920: Fork, Warren Co, NC, [age 6 of 28: S.M. Richardson as H of HH, age 30, indexed as MU, b: NC with wife Minnie: age 25, MU, NC and CH: Lula B. (7), Henry G. (5), George (3 yrs 6 mos.), Estelle (1 yr 8 mos.) …they are 2 doors away from the family of Garfield Richardson, also listed as MU and b: NC, he being age 26.
6. I located the following births in NC for Samuel M. Richardson and his wife Minnie nee Evans: (1) George: listed as born in 1916, no date given, no mothe rlisted, born in Warren County, sather listed as Samuel M. (no last name). (2) Estelle, listed as Estell, no birth year nor date given, no mother listed, shown as born in Warren County to father: S.M. (no last name). (3) Annie Lee: b: 10 Jan 1932 Nash County, father as Samuel Richardson, mother as Minnie Evans. (4) Edgar b: 21 Sept 1929 Nash County, DO above for parents. (5) Gladys b: 29 Feb 1936 (leap year baby!) in Halifax County, DO on parents. (6) James Arthur, see 1 above. (7) Minnie Lee b: 11 Mar 1934 Halifax County, DO on parents. (8) Pinky May b: 8 Nov 1927 Nash County, father DO above, mother shown as Mamie Evans.
7. I located a WWI draft registration card for your (potential) grandfather: Samuel Mark Richardson b: 15 Aug 1890 in Ancola, NC, listed as African, enlisted from Warren Co, NC on 5 June 1917; listed his occupation as a farmer working in Shocco, NC, shows dependants/relatives as hsi wife and 3 children. He shows as beign of medium height and build with dark brown eyes and black hair, no physical limitations listed, he signed with an “X” as his mark.
(on the 1930…Samuel and hsi wife and 3 oldest CH show as not being able to read nor write.)
8. It appears that Alexander enlisted in WWII out of Johnston Co, NC; he being born in abt. 1925, recruited from Fort Bragg NC, signed with an “X” when he enlisted on 26 Jun 1943.
9. Alexander (above) appears to have MD a gal named Donie(Donnie) nee Evans and had CH in NC.
10. Pinky/Pinkey May Richardson appears to have MD 2x: (1) Henry Evans…with whom she had 1 known CH: Clarence (listed alternately as surname Evans and Richardson) on 2 separate birth records, he shows as being b: 22 Oct 1945 in Nash County.
(2) James Albert Taylor…with whom she appears to have had 1 CH: James Rufus Taylor b: 14 Aug 1948 in Nash County, NC.
I hope this helps/gets you started etc…if a family tree is your goal in searching…if , on the other hand, your wish is to locate your birth father…perhaps enlisting the help of a “search angel” would be most helpful…they are FREE and very nice and can be located on numerous “adoption” or “locator” sites and typically, they search by specific location of the child’s birth county and state. We utilized this avenue initially to locate my husband’s birth father/family. Great luck to you in yoru continued efforts. Blessings~~~Laurie

Sorry, I took so long to answer. Yes they are. There were initially two recognized tribes, The Pee Dee Indian Nation of the Upper South and the Pee Dee Indians located in McColl, SC. There is also a second fraction in McColl also the MCDC Pee Dee Indian Tribe which has officially merged with the Pee Dee from the uppersouth and is now a band of that group therefore also recieving State Recognition. They are planning to build a cultural center.

My great grandfather was a Lynch but some of his siblings which included himself were indentured servants whose surnames were changed to Hyman which is the name of the person who took them into slavery. The slave owner was William T. Hyman. My gr grandfather’s real father was George Lynch. I have Hymans (Claudius) my grandfather’s brother who lived in Indian Woods and is buried there. Many of my relatives who were indentured servants of William T. Hyman are buried there as well. My gr grandfather and gr grandmother both refused to learn to read or write in english. They both spoke the Tuscorora language to each other and their children. I visit Indian Woods often to honor my Tuscarora ancestors.

Yes that is Walt Brown’s tribe  , but the Nottoway of Va Tribe 😀 are also decendants of the Cheroenhaka. My Plummers were actually Archers but the siblings were separated because of slavery and some were given the Plummer name who was the slave owner’s surname and rest of them ended up in Ahoskie where the Meherrin Tribe is located.
