This year along with the regular celebration and homecoming there will be a Grand Council to be held in order to discuss common history and recognition of one another as Southeastern Siouans.
I am working in conjunction with Dr. Heriberto Airy Dixon of New Palz, NY to gather the people at this years celebration events in Ithaca, NY.
One of the first steps in uniting us all is recognition of who we each are and where we fit in with this heritage. All Southeastern Siouan groups/tribes/bands/nations are requested to send at least one representitive of their people to this event in order to discuss and recognize one another in a spirit of unity and brotherhood.
This is not a U.S. Government event. The recognition is not federal, however the recognition of each other as legitimatly representing the People for their clans and kin where ever they may reside is an important step in healing as well sealing the rifts that have kept us apart in suspecious modes of thinking.
The following list is a preliminary of those that need to be contacted to circulate this information and event notification. If you have any additional questions, groups to add, or contact information please email me.

Do you have dates for this event? And is the Grand Council open or closed to only representatives?
I agree, it is time to unite. We spend far too much time and energy on evincing our differences. We have far more important things in common, eh?:)

Collins just a couple of questions, did you notice that there is no mention of the “Eastern Blackfoot’- Sissipahaw people (sp) in the list? and if this is to recoginize Southastern Siouan people then why are the Lakota and Mandan included, not that I don’t believe they should be but they are a Plains nation.

This is a preliminary list of people that need to be contacted. Do you know who to contact that is Eastern Blackfoot?
The list is preliminary and I need a list of further participants to invite.
I am adding an invite to the Lakota, Mandan, and Winnebago as observers because they do have ties to us even if anciently. If they are inabled to recognize us as brothers then that would be great as well.
This effort is a short notice push to gather in a Grand Council at the Tutelo gathering. I have spoken to a few people about this topic off and on for a while, but recieved word from Airy to go ahead and get the momentum started for it and that ” the town of Ithaca, Wells College, and Ithaca College are potential hosts and financial supporters” per Dr. Heriberto “Airy” Dixon. I am going to try and send out some letters within the next week or so to a few of the ones on the list I have addresses for. If anyone else could help me to do this by taking on a few from the list that would be very helpful in this effort. Just let me know who has dibbs on which tribe/band/group and keep me updated on the additionals.
I have the address to the Occaneechi Saponi, Saponi Nation of Missouri, Monacan Nation, and Many Feathers Foundation. I may need help on most of the other ones.
What I would like to see come out of this is a document of some kind showing that we all recognize one another as Southeastern Siouan descendents/tribes/nations/bands. Something that shows our legitimacy among our fellow Siouans. Anybody can attend, but I think in order for it to be legitimat, only council/board persons or their liasons could actually vote or sign to show recognition. Perhaps we could have a witness section on the document so that all in attendance could sign. I have also thought seriously about getting a few politicians to attend as well. The Grand Council would be far different than a Pow-Wow. It would be a starting piont for all our people where ever they may reside to take a stand together and open up dialogue between all the groups in order to support a growing movement for revitalization among our peoples.
None of us/(all the groups) are going away and our interest and efforts are not contingent upon whim or fade. This is serious business and as such needs to be understood for it’s vast potential. All suggestions and ideas are certainly welcomed. Anyone willing to volunteer to help in this would be greatly appreciated.

I’d wondered the same thing re:the Western tribes. You know I’m close by them. There are also the Omaha and Ponca right here. They actually have the verbal history of being out East by a great body of water originally, for sure at least the Ohio but maybe the Atlantic they say. Then there are the Osage in OK, I think. Also the Southern Ponca are in OK. Check out the Standing Bear story at Wikipedia. I can be of assistance in either contacting these or getting you the contact info. You might enjoy visiting the Nebraska Commisssion On Indian Affairs web site. The Director is Ponca and their headquarters is right here in this city. I’m actually here because my Omaha teacher’s daughter was a fellow student of mine and she encouraged me to find my Indian. The Indian Commission Dirctor’s daughter was also a fellow language student. The Omaha and Ponca speak the same language (English mostly:)) but seriously were together as a tribe not all that long ago and they are very nice and friendly people. The Omaha are very traditional. While they’ve lost alot of land they do still live on land they were on pre-contact. They were not forced to relocate other than the children being sent to boarding schools. There are quite a few other Siouan tribes in SD along with the Oglala Lakota and the Rosebud…let’s see, the Cheyenne River and others.
