Joanne Shenandoah sings a number of our songs. The Eskanye songs are documented as deriving from the Saponi/Tutelo people who were adopted into the Cayuga at Six Nations. I just ordered this album:

which appears to be all Eskanye songs, very pretty songs. She does her interpretation of them, the pace is much slower and modern instrumentation is added. One, at least, is played with a water drum, which is traditional. Traditionally, the pace is rather quick, and the dance is done with a scissor step. Felicia’s mom used to do it as a girl. (Gee, what a coincidence.)

I’ve also got her “Light Blood” album, which has a number of these songs as well, there’s also a Pigeon dance song we do at the beginning of a ceremony. So, our culture does persist. There’s also at lease one of our songs that’s become popularized as a Smoke Dance.

The water drum is traditonal…they would take a kettle and fill it half way with water then stretch a animal skin over the top.

I also have a song that was recorded on the 6 nations reservation….a song that was played by the tutelo back in I think the early 1900’s….It’s a ceremonial song and I was asked not to post it publically, but I can probally try and find what file folder I have it in and send it to you.

Here is is another video from the annual Tutelo park event…..it is David little eagle sanging….David Little Eagle is really good….not exactly a Tutelo song but still pretty good.

Only thing about that song…is I have a copy of it but it sounds Iroqious….it’s defiently not a Siouan rain or war dance.
