I am watching CSPAN and they are voting on Recognizing Virginia Indian Tribes. So far vote is 215 for 176 against. Maybe this will happen.:confused:

At 3:38 p.m. today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed legilslation recognizing the six tribes of Virginia Indians.
Rep. James Moran gave a rather impassioned speech in favor of passage.

There are several relevant stories in today’s Washington Post, including one in the Metro section on the passage (in the House) of this recognition bill. There’s a front page story (continued inside) about the archaeology at Jamestown; and also a whole special section about the Jamestown 400th anniversary, sort of a souvenir. If you live someplace that sells the Post, as many of us do, it’s definitely worth the 35 cents today. Lots of Virginia Indian history and news.
But don’t put cowrie shells in the vending machines, please.
That would be culturally more relevant than cowrie shells, at this latitude; but I was being silly.
Actually I have sort of worked for the Post (or anyway was a supportive parent, when my kids had a route), and I sympathize with the distributors who stock those dispensers. It’s amazing, some of the stuff people put into them, other than actual money. Besides cheating the distributor, it typically jams the machine for the next customer.
And, as I said, the paper today is a good buy at 35 cents.

Heath Shuler was the only Democrat to vote against this bill (and the implication that his negative vote resulted from Eastern Cherokee constituent pressure — I’m not saying that is so), scroll down to the “Related Stories” from their archives. It appears that they have about 40 such stories, over the past several years.
