Crystal, you mentioned that getting info from Hampton and W&M was like pulling teeth. Shouldn’t this info be public record? How are they witholding info from you?
We’ll have to come up with a plan to address this. I have some ideas.

encouraging)…
<<UF to help unravel island history through Cuban documents
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – University of Florida researchers are set to embark on a
unique Cuban rescue mission. They aim to save millions of pages of historical
documents dating as far back as 1578 which have been locked up in Havana
since 1959.
UF researchers made a deal with the Cuban National Archives in March to
preserve and copy about 10 million handwritten records of life, business and
shipping in Havana from 1578 to 1900.
The Notary Protocols contain births, deaths, property and slave ownership –
information about everything and everybody who passed through Havana en route
from Spain to America and back. At the time, just about everything went
through the Cuban city.
“It was like the capital of Florida,” said Arva Parks, a South Florida
historian and author.>>

April 18, 2001 at 6:07 pm #5173Linda, knows a couple of people in Europe that may be able to help us. They have been doing NA research there for some years.
Most universities have email directories. We can find the right people at various schools and email them. I guess we need to start with a list of VA schools and divide up the work amongst ourselves.

April 18, 2001 at 6:07 pm #5174The one person I know who’s actually done this kind of research in England is back in the states now — somewhere. He’ll turn up when he’s ready. The other person, a professor, is, last I heard, moving to England, but I haven’t heard for sure yet, and if he has, I wouldn’t think is settled yet, so there’s nothing immediate I can offer.
April 18, 2001 at 6:07 pm #5175You may wish to speak with Rose Powhatan.
She is a Fulbright Scholar and spent quite sometime in england studying on higher education sojourn. She worked I believe in the Ashmolean museum (lots of early VA indian material housed there). she is a Pumunkey who lives outside DC.Her husband mike (Taino) can be seen through the Powow season in va selling there AULD/POWHATAN t-shirts featuring va depictions from early resources.
she also was at the indian conference at W&M
a few years ago. she knows alot about family geneology and “undercover” info from VA via Rountree and friends research.
