Hey!
On my E-mail, from an unknown person, was a one line message that there is family of Walker, Wade and Burton in Virgilina, Va.
With the Wades and Burtons belonging to Blue wing Baptist church.
I have all of these surnames. Originating in Va., Early…I e-mailed back with no return yet. Any knowledge of blue wing Baptist Church? Virgilina is on the Va, NC border, as some of you will know. I sure didn’t. Someone is trying to let me know though.

February 2, 2005 at 1:34 am #13506Virgilina is about 25 or 30 mi NE of me….. and the Satterfield, Moore, Allen group we have been discussing. Blue Wing Creek is a branch of the Roanoke. I think the church may be in the northern edge of Granville co. I’ll check.
February 2, 2005 at 1:34 am #13520saj,
I read where you have Wade ancestors from Va. Do you know if they spelled it Waid at any point in time? My Waid family live in the same area here in greenbrier co. West Virginia with a family that spell it Wade. I have discussed the spelling with my waid family and they said it is possible that we could be related but we don’t know for sure. I know that name changes have happened ofton over a matter of time. Who knows we could be related to each other.
February 2, 2005 at 1:34 am #13523Waitman,
I don’t know if any spelled their name Waid but we would have to see if we have any common ancestors..how far back do you have the Waid ancestry?

February 2, 2005 at 1:34 am #13527I have them back to 1802 for sure. John A. Waid according to death records in greenbrier co. states he died in 1874 at the age of 72. His wife was Elizabeth Beard. She is listed as being 76 years old at the time of her death in 1872. She was born 1796 in Bath co. Virginia. Her father was born in Germany. Bill has given me some leads on who John Waids father may have been. One was Lenoard Wade another was Pleasant Waid/Wade. I went to the Greenbrier co. courthouse today and found that leonard didn’t have a son named John but pleasant Waid did. The name Waid/Wade was spelled one way one time and the other the next.
February 2, 2005 at 1:34 am #13528Waitman,
We will need to see who Pleasant is for sure, if he is really the father of John, but the Wades were out of Va earlier. Mary Wade or Mary “Polly” Wade born 1736 Halifax county, father Robert Wade. Pleasant is a name in the Allen line I know of but if you can get your Waid/Wade line back further in time that would be good. If I find anything I will post it on share genealogy. My computer is acting really crazy..Just shuts down whenever. If I disappear from the forum for a few days that will be why.
Thanks, sue J
February 2, 2005 at 1:34 am #13753Hi Sue,
This page shows a map of Blue Creek. It says it got it’s name from the abundance of blue-winged birds around the creek.

I didn’t see Blue Wing Baptist, but if you go to the History section (for 1830), it mentions Christ Church at Mayo Chapel and Calvary Baptist churches.

I still haven’t been able to find out any info on the Blue Wing Baptist Church. No history of it, at least not yet.

February 2, 2005 at 1:34 am #13763Hi Sue,
I found two Blue Wing Baptist Churches online:
Blue Wing Baptist Church
597 Blue Wing Rd,
Roxboro, NC 27574
(919) 693-9550
Blue Wing Grove Baptist Church
Highway 602,
South Boston, VA 24592
(434) 572-1351
South Boston and Virgilina are both in Halifax County, VA. Roxboro is just across the border in Person County, NC. According to their Rootsweb page (http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncperson/cemetery_list_master.htm), there looks to be a cemetery there, too.
Both are within 15-20 miles from Virgilina. Maybe one of them could help?

February 2, 2005 at 1:34 am #13767Stacey…… the site you posted is where all mine and Becky’s cemetery work is posted. We have listed Blue Wing Church and will eventually survey its cemetery but the church is actually a couple of miles into Granville co. near the Va/NC line. We listed it because its people have ties to Person co.
February 2, 2005 at 1:34 am #13769Didn’t finish before I posted. On a roadmap or mapquest, follow 49 from Triple Springs heading to Clarksville. Blue Wing Church Rd should be off the right of 49 immediately after you enter Granville co from Person co.
February 2, 2005 at 1:34 am #13770Hi Dreaminghawk,
Thanks for keeping me honest. I should have mapped the whole address rather than just the city of Roxboro. 🙂 Your directions place it even closer to Virgilina (within a few miles) and most likely the one that Sue was looking for.

Thank you so much! I’ll check out a map.
This is exciting!
