Except:

Almost all of the antebellum court records of James City County, the jurisdiction within which the study area lies, were destroyed during the Civil War and nearly all of Charles City’s early records were lost. However, the records of the local courts of Surry (split off from James City County in 1652), Isle of Wight, and York Counties essentially are intact and warrant a thorough examination.

The more I think about this, the more I think the main page should have a Links tab. Moreover, maybe we as a group could start pulling links on NC, VA, KY, TN…as well as genealogical family websites, links etc. I don’t know if we could start a thread on the History forum and let everyone contribute to the links? What do you think?

I do have some (?)s about some family. I have earlier posted the topic about this family but it seems appropriate again in here.

I am decended from a Robert Wilson Putney who with his Wife came west from, I believe, the Richmond VA area. This family by oral family history is said to have had a substantial amount of land holdings and slaves. This Robert Wilson Putney is buried in the Springfield MO National Cemetery. He had fought for the Union Army out of W.Va. His mother was a Wilson, such he had her name as his middle name.

I don’t know how to merge these two topics, but I would be greatful if any one else could help. I would like to know about their Tribal affiliation(s). These families were of dark skin and hair. We, the male heirs do have all have some type of a brown birth markings. One of my Cuzs and I have a mark on our right shoulder. Not sure of the rest of the cuzs from this line, where they have this brown birth mark.

I know Sue has helped me find a GGrandma’s name, Wooten. Thanks Sue.

Hi All, I have been doing some extensive research of the Prince William Co VA area and the “Northern Neck”~etc. Shirley, my Sparks hunt leads me there. My 4th Greatgrandma Mary Elizabeth Sparks was born there in PW Co 1772. In Ancestry.com there are alot of other peoples trees that have her father listed as George W. Sparks~but the bdates are not feasible. I feel in my gut that the name is right, but they have 2 generations out of the order. I find George in Maryland recds and some of his forefathers and mothers and wife Sarah, but am not able to connect him to Mary as his dau. I now know alot of recds were destroyed in that area during the Revolutionary War. Anyway, I found these links while searching~Hey Bee, this might interest you.
