I’m VERY nervous about this. I have just decided to visit the Monacan Nation. And, I would like your good wished to go with me. I know I must be humble. I wish I could know more about who I might be. So, I’m just ging to go and observe and learn and listen and gather what I can. I won’t claim anything, but just try to gather information. There is a living village at the Natural Bridge. My grandparents, parents, even us as kids would go there all the time. I am curious to know what the treatment of these people is by those preserving the culture and I want to know more about their ways. I get restless say, every 3 months and pack the kids and hit the road. I have relatives in Amherst, Albermarle, and Roanoke on all sides; even my husbands people too. I’m scared because i’m so afraid that I’ll be somehow disappointed, but I feel like I have to sort of know more. What do you all think.

I have never visited them, but would love to do so as well. My ancestors lived at a place called “Mount Miserable” or “Miserable Mountain” (love that name) and I was told it was in Rockbridge County.
You’ll be fine. 🙂 When are you going? Maybe I’ll visit that place one day . . .

Natural Bridge is one place to meet a few Monacans, at the Village, altho I don’t THINK all the folks working there are. I’m not sure…
Two others would be at the Annual Pow-wow, in May (I think), and at the October Homecoming, which is much less of a public affair and is held at the Church/Museum/Community center complex. Monacan from all over come back for the homecoming, altho’ my experience is that visitors are welcome also.
They also serve a great meal, too, which is always a plus in my book….
I missed the October Homecoming and last May’s Powwow. I’m just going for a first visit. I think based upon the reception I get as a visitor I may return at their official events in the future.

It’s just that I am sensitive and this whole issue about BLack indians and acknowledgement has sort of scared me back into my rabbit hole a bit.
