We were blessed for a long time by a resident geneologist, Bill Childs, who did free lookups for just about any and all for a very long time. How he did all that has always amazed me. Understandably he has taken a sabbatical from all this, and, even though I miss his contributions terribly, in many ways I hope when he gets back into his research he does take another tack. I think we’ve been squandering his talents.
What I’m thinking is that we set up a system in which various people will take turns being the local ‘look up.’ I suggest we either chip in for a yearly Ancestry.com membership and give the un/pw to whoever’s volunteering at the time. The deal is, you get free Ancestry.com access with the understanding you use it to do look ups for folks who don’t have access to it. At the same time, our official policy is to encourage everybody who can manage it, to get such a membership for themselves. We need to focus more on learning how to do our own fishing. Someone like Bill should be used as a resource person to help interpret finds and give direction for deeper digging. As I was saying, we either chip in for the membership, or we can consider allowing google adsense ads to run on the site, generating some funds to pay for the Ancestry.com memberships.
Nativelanguages.org, http://www.native-languages.org/ is running Google adsense ads, they seem rather appropriate, take a look and see what you all think.

I would be more than happy to do this. I don’t have ancestry because it is a luxury, that at the present time with four extra people in our house (three of them children) I cannot afford. What I do have is time because they are in school. This has sort of become my job which soon I may be compensated for. Difficult situation. I may end up a foster parent. Anyhow I have the time and would love the search. Saj

I only wish I had the time. But I do think this is a good ideal,you have. I am willing to help in any way that I can. Like I said I don’t have the time. I have had to stop researching my Ancestory. I have had several of my friends and relatives to take the eternal journey with our Ancestors of late. And it has been hard to rebound. So much for me. Like I said let me know what I can do.

Oh Sue, I’m so happy to see you step forward. I couldn’t ask for anyone better. I’ll look to sending out a mass mail asking all registered members for a donation. If that doesn’t raise enough, we’ll see about the Google ads, I guess, unless I hear some strenuous objections.
If we get ads like nativelanguages.org it won’t be too bad, since they’re mostly for genealogy sites, which we’ll be purchasing/referring people to anyway. Whatever money we get for hosting the ads we’ll just be recycling back to them.
I do not always have a lot of time, but I do have a subscription to ancestory if anyone would like a look up. As you stated, it is only a start and research needs to be done on ones own, but I do have access to all those census’ !

I dont have a current subscription but I can look up things on family tree maker cd’s to help in research if anyone needs them. I would be willing to help in the evenings on looking things up if needed.
I was planning to get a subscription to them and one other research site before the new year. I can donate 4-6 hours a week doing lookups.
I also found online sioux, dakota, lakota, and arapaho free downloadable dictionaries and lessons for anyone interested.
It looks like, with time, language reconstruction for those working on it is looking both easier and more likely.
To me it is imperative to saving our native languages to teach them to our kids at home. We have to get, spread, and accurately record with modern technology the wealth of information that the older generations hold before it all gets lost. I personally am learning and teaching my son arapaho first as it has fewer speakers, then dakota as those are my direct blood lines as far as I know.
I am happy to do lookups from my book & papers collection.

Hi Linda! I can help on research. Yes, Bill Childs took his sabatical(sp) abt the same time I became a member of this forum and I had so hoped to correspond with him. Also, I didn’t know her, but had hoped to connect with Brenda Collins Dillon cause we had WVA roots. Anyway, I can help and every little bit helps, right??;) Take care and once again, thanks for the opportunity to belong to a wonderful membership. Greydove, by any chance is your Bailes surname the same as Baliles/Baililes?
Have seen that name in Patrick County, VA. Actually, there aren’t many of your paternal names that I have not seen around them parts.
Hi Beeleaf! I don’t know abt the spelling variations. I looked it up and all it said was — Bailes 1. variant of Bayliss — 2. from the genitive case of Middle English bail(e) ‘bailey’ hence a topographic name for someone who lived beside a castle. My line goes back to Thomas Bailes b 1760 Kanawha VA d 1827 Peters Creek Nicolas VA. and etc. But, your post made me think :rolleyes: maps? So I looked at some old VA maps. Your Patrick Co is 4 counties so. of my Alleghany Co. and Alleghaney 2 cos over to Nicolas Co. But, you got the Blue Ridge Mts, the Alleghanys and Greenbrier or Black Mtns. Wow, our people sure could move over mtns, huh?;) I can post more on my thread in this forum Hart, Bailes, Foster & Martin. Maybe if we put our heads together we can find out more abt our ancient people, and who knows, we could be related…close proximities of places. close to same times, ndn ties???
