In many of my posts I have mentioned treaties from tribal group to tribal group, included in this process would have been gift exchanges “payments”, shared resources and eventually lands etc.

A huge part of the induction ceremonies between groups like the Nyhassan and the Iroquoian people would have been wampum belts and strings, ,here’s alink to look at;

Good old Tuscaroras.com. You know, for a week or so, I administered that site. It was my first experience with a forum, and my first experience with Indian country politics and wannabe-itis witch hunts. If you look on the front page, there’s an article in the left-hand column “Tuscarora Influence on Pennsylvania.” It’s about the Path Valley, where my family was, and the first piece of documentation I found that related to my search for my family’s history.

I have a few pieces of “rock” that are perfectly squared but in different sizes found in a field just outside of Hillsboro, NC. When these pieces were taken to UNC, we were told it was an earlier form of wampum, prior to the use of the Roanoke shell. Linda, you have seen them, I brought them for show when we did the Emporia Peanut festival a few years ago. My question is, has anyone found or seen any reference to wampum in this form?
