Hello everyone,
I’m new to the list, and like most of you, I’ve been researching my family tree for a while. I was told when I was young about our Indian ancestor, but not much about her. I live in WV and my mother’s people were mostly from VA. I noticed a list of Saponi names with Watkins on it. My ggrandmother was Hattie Viola Watkins and her parents were Francis Marion Watkins and Ellen Louisa Cooper from Virginia. These seem to be the only amcestors with possible Indian names. Anyone out there have any relation to these folks? My father was adopted and his birth mother’s name was Elvira Arbogast. I think her people came from Pendleton County and I have seen that name also mentioned. Anyway, any help will be appreciated. Thanks.
October 27, 2007 at 11:06 pm #28904Hello dispencer…welcome to the forum…I have numerous Watkins/Wadkins in my maternal tree but cannot be certain exactly whom your coudl be or where they may “fit in” in teh information I have….can you please provide some dates for the above mentions folks…or maybe some siblings etc. Thank you in advance. I cannot personally attest to whether or not yoru Watkins were Saponi but I do know that they did tend to marry into my lines which are reported to be of “Melungeon” origins…primarilly being mixed-blood peoples. The oldest Watkis I have indexed was Benedict Watkins Sr…he being born 1760 in NC and having MD and migrated to Floyd Co, KY…some of his CH ultimately removed to Magoffin and Greenup Counties as well. Those Watkins in my tree MD into surnames: Collins, Watkins, Cole, Perkins, Stone, Howard, Poe, Barnett, Salyer, Wireman, Bailey, Harmon, Prater & Hale primarilly. Again…welcome aboard and best of luck to you in your research. Blessings~~~Laurie

October 27, 2007 at 11:06 pm #28908Wow! You guys are good! Thank you for the information. The Spencer surname comes from my father’s adoptive parents that I haven’t been able to trace very far back. My dad’s parents, Harold Leroy Spencer was born in 1899 in New York state and Blanche Irene Short was born 1900. Her father was Archie Short and her mother Emarettie (no surname so far), both born in New York.
Other surnames so far:
Maternal: Dodd, Elmore, (Jarvis or DOuglas), Paxton, Abbott, Coalter, Skaggs, Stone, Helmick, Watkins, Cooper, Rutherford, Douglas, Basnett, Lang, Connolly, Darley (ie), Morris, Hinkle. (VA)
Paternal: (Birth) Arbogast, Price, (WV);(Adoptive) Spencer, Short (NY)

Thanks, Brother. Gonna have to get out my red marker again. ;~)
Dispencer, welcome!
October 27, 2007 at 11:06 pm #28951Well, little sister……. go ahead and redmark all your surnames. You will eventually discover that, like me, all your lines are mixed 😉
October 27, 2007 at 11:06 pm #28952Thanks beeleaf. Where are you Spencer ancestors from? I am really interested in the Siouan people in Virginia and North Carolina. I have become good friends with several Monacans that live here now and know low hard it was for them to keep their people together for so many years. I actually had my DNA done a couple of years ago to check to see if the stories were true and it came up with a small percentage of NA but I still can’t find that line. Chalk it up to the racist laws in Virginia that changed all the public records of native people there. I think this list is a great place for people to search and thank you, Linda, for all the work you have done.
October 27, 2007 at 11:06 pm #28960Richard Haithcock has associated the Watkins name with families he believes are Saponi. I see it on a list he prepared. He’s a researcher out of the Ohio Saponi community.
October 27, 2007 at 11:06 pm #28985Thanks beeleaf. Where are you Spencer ancestors from?
Virginia foothills. Just over the hump from ya, I reckon.
BTW, one of my cousins would also be a Di Spencer.
Ken, LOL. I don’t doubt it. ;~)

Hey, Linda. Would that be the list for Pittsylvania CO, VA, 1782-1785, or a different one?
Dispencer, how far back can you trace your Watkins?
October 27, 2007 at 11:06 pm #28988I don’t know the county, I’m just referring to a list he put together at one point of “Southeastern American Indian Family Surnames.” I’ve VERY often seen these names reiterated here by posters reporting Indian ancestry.
