I realize that this may be a strange question for this site … and so far, I think many of my questions have been strange (as a newcomer) – but I’d like to lay this to temporary rest if I can.

My maternal family – which has a Cherokee legend but also Shawnee rumors … also has a rumor of “Apache” – which came at least from my grandparents’ generation.

Does anybody here know of a way the legend of Apache could have evolved from any of the regional Tribes or bands of VA, SC, etc?

While it is true that a gggggrand-uncle of some sort was one of the first Territorial Governors of the New Mexico Territory – he died there (of an opium overdose, bless his soul) and no one else is known to have ventured into what I know as Apache territory so, just trying to identify or perhaps dismiss a story.

Dan that’s not such a wierd question, there were many “War captives” that were sent to Florida and many probably were Apache people, also I have talked to several people that were of apache descent from the south, some married out of Arizona etc but in Louisiana there is the Lipan Apache people, Ebarb Apaches people, and the Choctaw APche people. Originally all Spanish slaves, if you do some research you may find some answers, look at last names, and one source not mentioned is the Creole web sites that have amazing amount of members and research, with connections to many of our peoples from the Carolinas.

Thanks Tom. I sure don’t know of any connections in my lines farther south than SC – but I’m also finding that in addition to the legends and rumors I DO have, there are a few others that seem they should be there … but aren’t! Like, lines where I have pics of high-cheekboned relatives … but they’re only married to the legends … not supposedly a part of them. However, this does put the Apache in the realm … and I’d like to ask you about the “Choctaw/Apache” (or did you spell APche right?)

If you look at any of the Louisiana Folklife sites you should find links to the Choctaw Apache people, there is several communities that belong to those folks.

Also there are many people that may have been connected to those communities that like all people have had out marriages., so not all names etc that you run into may be complete, meaning that there is more names that tye back into those communities etc that are listed, just like here at Saponi Town.
