Hello. I am wondering if anyone has seen information about a few ancestors. These particular ancestors are still kind of uncertain.
Has anyone heard of descendants in the Saponi tribe from Allen Jones and Euphema [West?] in Northampton/Halifax, NC? The “Allen Jones” that I have seen online was almost certainly white and presided over a place called Mt. Gallant Plantation in Gaston, NC. However, I don’t know if this is the correct Allen Jones or if it’s just many Ancestry accounts wanting to connect their tree to this Allen Jones. There is another “Allen Jones” listed in census records in Halifax County in years after the first Allen Jones died, and this younger Allen Jones is listed near to many names that I have seen associated with the Saponi tribe and other nearby tribes such as Going, Manly, and Bowser.
It seems that Euphema [West?] was Native and perhaps Saponi. I’m uncertain of this last name, but I feel that it may be “West” because one listed descendant is named Erasmus “West” Jones, who followed a similar movement pattern as others mentioned on this site, likely moving from Halifax/Northampton, NC to somewhere in Maryland (maybe Anne Arundel/Baltimore, MD) to Licking County, OH. Some descendants of Erasmus West Jones also lived in Berkeley County, WV, which I have also seen mentioned on this site. I am descended from a possible sibling of Erasmus West Jones named Elijah Jones, who is listed in census records in Nansemond County, VA, the area where most of my ancestors are located.
Has anyone heard of this Allen Jones and Euphema [West?] or have any guidance about these Jones names?
January 6, 2025 at 4:57 am #67594I encountered this line recently in an Ancestry.com family tree. The tree (and others) has Erasmus West Jones marrying Rachel Penn (Penn is a surname on Rick Haithcock’s list of Saponi/Tutelo/Catawba names), and their daughter Angeline Jones (1832-1916) marrying Eliphalet Augustus Trowbridge (1832-1899).
There is a picture for Angeline Jones Trowbridge posted by ShirleyTurner1998
I am not familiar with this particular Jones line, there is not much to go on. I am familiar with the Trowbridge line from Morris NJ she marries into though. I have cousins who descend from this line that marry into my Jones line in Indiana:
Barton W S Trowbridge (1881-1947) who marries Sarah Margaret Riley (1887-1973). Sarah Riley is the daughter of Nancy Brower (1847-1923). I descend from Nancy’s sister Barbara Brower (1855-1915) who married Joseph Oscar Smith (1850-1930). Joseph O. Smith is the grandson of Massa Jones (my 5g-grandmother) who is a Siouan descendant.

Someone posted at this link about this family, and it looks like they also didn’t know who Erasmus West Jones was descended from:

In this link, it looks like one of the grandchildren of Erasmus West Jones is named “Allen Jones.” Maybe this shows a possibility that Erasmus West Jones is descended from Allen Jones and Euphema [West?].
As for Elijah Jones in Nansemond County, VA, it may be possible that Euphema [West?] is a parent because Elijah Jones is listed as being born in 1761, while Euphema [West?] is listed in some places as dying in about 1762. However, I also have not found much information yet other than this for why Elijah Jones is connected to Allen Jones or Euphema [West?].
It looks like there are ties of the name West to the Meherrin tribe, but I don’t know if this name is associated or not with the area of Northampton/Halifax. Do you know about this name in this area?
