I haven’t checked this particular line further but most of the Wallens in S.W. Va area go back to Wallen/Walling Long Hunters who were in Pittsylvania Co., Va in the 1760s and moved to Montgomery/Washington/Russell Co., Va by the 1780s and on into the Lee Co., Va area.
I wonder if those folks are related to my Mary Whaling (Whalen)? She married Christopher Foley 12 Apr 1803 in Patrick Co., VA (near Pittsylvania Co). Surety by John Whalen.

Post moved to its own thread.
As you know, the 1790 & 1800 Virginia census were destroyed.
I didn’t find any “Whaling/Whalen” people in Henry/Patrick Co’s but here are some possibles:
1787 Henry Co., Va Tax List “A”
(Categories: Date visited, Surname, first name, Tax charged to; White males 16 to 21, Blacks +16, Blacks -16, Horses colts mares & mules, Cattle)
5/9, Weldon, John, Self; 0, 0, 0, 0, 0.
………………………………………………….
1787 Henry Co., Va Tax List “B”
7/12, Foley Luke, Self; 0, 0, 0, 1, 2 (Not tithable).
7/13, Waldon, Joseph, Self; 0, 0, 0, 1, 2.
7/14, Waldon, Moses, Self; 0, 0, 0, 2, 7.
7/14, Waldon, Nathan, Self; 0, 0, 0, 1, 0 (Not tithable).
7/14, Waldon, William Jr, Self; 0, 0, 0, 1, 1.
7/14, Waldon, Benjamin, Waldon, William Jr; 0, 0, 0, 0, 0.
Same Tax List “B” –
4/21, Waldon, Aron, Self; 0, 0, 0, 0, 1.
4/21, Wardon, Robert, Self; 0, 0, 0, 1, 0.
4/21, Wardon, William, Self; 0, 0, 0, 1, 0.
4/27, Foley, Bartlett, Self; 0, 0, 0, 3, 2 (Not tithable).
……………………………………………………
A James Walden is on the 1782 Henry Co., Va Tax lists.
A John Weldon (5 Whites, 1 Black), is on the Richmond Co., Lower Lunenburg Parish (not the county) list of Robert Tomlin. This was a Va State Ennumeration, compiled from lists for years 1782 thru 1785 with no specific year listed for this entry. (Richmond Co was created in 1742 from Henrico.)
……………………………………………………
A possible line of research for you based on land patents 1737-1770 of ‘old’ Brunswick/Lunenburg County areas (present counties of Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry, Franklin and Patrick Co’s).
On “Sepr.9th, (1768), Richard WALDEN, 400 Ac Beg. on his Cor. pine th.e about to his Cor. pine formerly Jas. Tinkler thence About for Qty.”
This may be the same James Tinkler who on “Mar.16.1738.” lived on the south side of the Stanton River above the mouth of the Otter River who rec’d 400 acres on assingment from Jacob MACGEHEE (use the “search” button for this surname). This James Tinkler/Tinker had a number of land entries in the area west of Brunswick Co over a number of years, so the Stanton River location shouldn’t be considered where Richard Walden’s land was.
Additionally, there are land entries for numerous Walling and Walton people.
………………………………………………………….
Speculation only:
There is at least one person ‘out there’ who thinks the 1787 William Waldon Jr (b.abt.1751), is the son of William Walden (b.abt.1730), s/o Elisha Walling/ Wallen, b. 1708 Salem, NJ, d. 1785 Henry Co., Va – a 1746 Land patent for land on Smith River near Martinsville, Va is cited as proof the older Elisha Walling/Wallen was there. I found 4 Land patents for various locations which may or may not be creeks/branches of Smith River during the 1745 to 1748 period and it’s possible that the “land on Smith River” citation may be an abbreviated version of one of these and there are Blevins in the general area.
However, I haven’t found any evidence that Elisha (b.1708) had a son William.

June 2, 2007 at 5:02 pm #26809Wow, thank you very much, Bill!
I have not spent much time on the Whalens, as it is still unclear whether Christopher Foley and Mary Whalen are ancestors or cousins. The Foleys are as dizzying as the Collinses! Both my parents descend from Foleys who mingled with Bowlings, etc. Both descend from Jeremiah and Nancy Foley, at least.
I appreciate the help!

June 2, 2007 at 5:02 pm #26827Bill, what are some of those creeks/branches of Smith River that you mentioned above? Have you run across it being referred to as the Irvine or Irvine River?
Think I must have missed how the Blevins fit in there. That’s a name I recognize.
Have never heard of Tinkler, but if MACGEHEE is the same as McGhee, it’s familiar. I will search and read some more.
I was just looking at a list of early Henry County area marriages. One William Walden married Catherine Foley on 10 Aug 1782.
June 2, 2007 at 5:02 pm #26846Bee,
Regarding your comment on whether they were ‘ancestors or cousins’, maybe we should start with the specific info on your grandparents or great-grandparents and see where it leads.
I do have a data-point or I would not put it this way 🙂
Bill
June 2, 2007 at 5:02 pm #26863Thank you, Bill!
I’ll start with my paternal grandparents:
John Roy Branch md. Bertha Alice Foley (in my avatar)
Her parents were William Howard Foley and Mattie Bouldin
W. Howard Foley’s parents were supposed to be William “Buck” Foley and Mary Virginia Ross (but he is missing from the census when he’d be 6 yrs. old, so may have been found on porch step)
William “Buck” Foley’s parents were Jeremiah Foley and Nancy Thomas.
That’s where the conflicting info begins, for both Jeremiah and Nancy.
June 2, 2007 at 5:02 pm #26864Already left out the tricky part of it. Doh!
William Howard Foley’s wife Mattie Bouldin’s parents were George Frank Bouldin and Nannie E. M. K. Foley.
Nannie’s parents were William Lee Foley and Mary Foley.
William Lee Foley’s parents were Wesley Foley and Matilda Bowling (the line that connects to James and Marvel Bowling)
Mary Foley’s parents were the aforementioned Jeremiah and Nancy.
June 2, 2007 at 5:02 pm #26865My maternal side:
Stephen Frank Foley md. Wootsie Lee Joyce (Joyce, Turner, Daniel lines)
Steve Foley’s parents were Abram Foley and Nancy Ella Canaday
Abram’s parents were Reed Foley and Judith Adeline Witt
Reed’s parents were Jeremiah Foley and Nancy
Judith Adeline Witt’s parents were Adam Witt and Permelia or Macapie Foley
But don’t leave yet…
Nancy Ella Canaday’s parents were Riley Canaday and Mary J. Foley (his second wife)
Mary J. Foley’s parents were Stephen Foley (son of Jeremiah and Nancy) and Nancy J. Burnett
I think that’s all, so far.
June 2, 2007 at 5:02 pm #26943From Marian Dodson Charito’s “Entry Record Book, 1737-1770, Land entries in the present Virginia counties of Halifax, Pittsylvania, Henry, Franklin, and Patrick” :
“Decr. Ye 28. 1768 – Luke Fowley 400 Ac Beg. on his Lines Next Smiths Rr. of his Survey Near Adam’s Order Line th.e about for Qty.” (th.e = thence)
Same date: “Luke Fowley 400 Ac on Puppey Cr. Beg. About a Mile Above the Mouth Runing up & down on both sides for Qty.”
Same date, for Luke Fowley: “Also 400 Ac Beg. at a Blazed W.O. on a No. br. of Goblingtown Cr. th.e About for Qty.” (W.O. = White Oak).
Same date, for Luke Fowley: “Also 400 Ac on a br. of Goblingtown Cr. Beg. Next to Workmans & Barnets th.e about for Qty.”
Same date:
“Jno. Kindrick, Thos. Hutchings & Willm WHAILEY 400 Ac Beg. on the Dividing Ridge Between Read Cr. & Beaver Cr. at a W.O. with a Razor Blade sticking in it thence About for Qty.”
Same date, and referring to the three men above:
“Also 400 Ac Beg. on the Topp of the Bull Mtn. where Hendersons Wagon Road Crosses it th.e About for Qty.”
Others filing Land Entries on 28 Dec 1768:
John Kindrick, 400 Ac, Big Sycamore Cr.
Jonathan Hanby, 400 Ac, small fork of Peters Cr opposite Chesnut Mtn.
Jonathan Hanby, 400 Ac, head of Peters Cr.
John Daniel, 400 Ac, head of So. Fork of Mayo under the Main Mtn.

Regarding William Howard Foley’s parents, have you considered this William H. from the 1880 Patrick Co., Va Fed. Census, ED160 Smiths River; 15 June; p.16D; Household 147:
FOLEY, Bleueford D.; W, m, 44, Farmer, Va, Va, Va. (elsewhere as Bluford)
…….., Esther Ann; W, f, 35, Wife, Ky, Va, Va. (elsewhere as Hester)
…….., Nancy E.; 12, dau, Va.
…….., Lucinda R.; 10, dau, Va.
…….., Mary V.E.; 8, dau, Va.
…….., WILLIAM L.H.; 5, son, Va.
…….., Charles D (?); 2, son, Va.
On the 1850 Patrick census, Bluford is the son of James Foley Jr, b.abt. 1812 Va, and Nancy (some say maiden name is JANES), b.abt. 1809 Va. James & Nancy Foley’s son Hardin C. Foley, b.abt.1838, moved to Hancock Co., Tenn.
June 2, 2007 at 5:02 pm #26974Thank you, Bill!
I knew that Bartholomew and/or Luke had been in the area for a long time, but only had info about the general area. Still am not sure who begat who, but I think it’s safe to say I’m related to them all. ;~)
Yes, I did consider that other William Foley. I’ve always felt a certain tug toward Bluford and his family. (If memory serves, his wife was Hester Ann Jefferson, btw.) But, while their son William was of around the same age as my g-grandpa, they are buried in two different places.
Didn’t know that James’ wife Nancy might have been a JANES. I’m not familiar with that surname. I wonder if it could be a mangling of the surname JANEY?
June 2, 2007 at 5:02 pm #26976Here are my random ponderings (about my gr-grandfather), posted separately so as not to confuse fact with fantasy. ;~)
In the 1880 census where little William Howard Foley (age 6) does not appear, there is a 5 year old named Jeremiah. (This is House 196, William G. Foley, who is supposed to be the father.) I wonder about a clerical error, but it sure seems like a big one, to get the name and age both wrong. I’ve tried to find this Jeremiah later, but no luck so far.
Next, a question: Are the surnames BURNETT and BENNETT interchangeable?
As is common in our family, my g-grandpa went by his middle name, Howard. It seems to be the first time the name “Howard” is used. In the 1870 census, row 33, Thomas Burnett is listed with the Foley family (William G and Mary Virginia Ross Foley). House #34 is Howard Burnett.
Flip to 1900. I copied a page from that census. House 69: WIlliam G and MAry Foley family, #70 Mattie Foley, #71 Howard Foley family (he’s listed as Howard W. instead of W. Howard), #72 CHarles Foley, #73 Geo. Frank Bouldin (parents of Howard’s second wife & my g-grandma), James M. Foley, Howard BENNETT, and what looks like a Nolen. I’m related to all of these families, and at least have to wonder if my g-grandpa was named after Howard Burnett/Bennett.
June 2, 2007 at 5:02 pm #27006Hmmm. I just found this very interesting, yet lengthy info, which includes mention of TURKS:
http://home.earthlink.net/~dougmcintosh/Pages/Desc%20of%20Ferd%20Habsburg.pdf
The Foley Walden stuff begins on page 10. There’s a Kentucky Jessee Bowling mentioned later.
June 2, 2007 at 5:02 pm #27013Here’s the very long link for the html version of that:
