My aunt and I have been doing family research for some time now, and we have hit a road block. We are searching for a g-g-g- grandfather William Albert Smith born in WV 14 March 1860 who married an Elizabeth B (not certain of last name) born in WV abt 1860. They were married in 1877. We guess in WV, but I have searched records and can’t find any certain info. Family info says that Elizabeth was at least part Cherokee, what is called in Appalachia as melungeon. William died in Martins Ferry, Ohio in 1862, and Elizabeth died 26 July 1934 at Columbus State Mental Hospital in Ohio. William had lived in Martins Ferry for 50 yrs and worked as a carpenter. He was a Methodist. William appears in the 1930 Federal Census living as a border with a family by the last name of Dierkes. They seem to have disappeared from the census until then. I have both death certificates, but neither list parental info. These two had 2 sons, Ralph Lonzo Smith 1880-1952 and Tate Smith 1891-1982. Ralph’s death certificate lists him as being born in Weirton, WV which is in the northern panhandle of the state; however, there is a question as to if he was born near Weston, WV. Perhaps Elizabeth was in and out of sanitariums? Any clues??
Hello, my name is Sean. William and Elizabeth Smith were my gr-gr-great grandparents; I’m descended from Ralph Lonzo Smith’s daughter Virginia. I have tried to find more info on them. From what I understand, the Smith family disowned William for marrying an Indian woman, that’s why no one knows who his parents were. Ralph Lonzo Smith never talked about his parents either. Ralph’s death certificate lacked parent names, and he was born in Weston not Weirton, as it said; his obituary had it correct. I’m trying to locate his brother, Richard Tate Smith’s death certificate, hoping it was more detailed. Also, I still have to see if it is possible to get inmate records for Elizabeth at the mental hospital. I was wondering if you could email me copies of William and Elizabeth’s certificates?
