My grandmother was Mary E. Wilson b.1869 in western NC. to John and Martha. The only other info I have is John and Martha were listed in Cherokee in 1860 and Census shows John born in Tenn. and Martha in NC. My father told me she [Mary E.]was with a group of traveling NA passing through and camped on his fathers land in Caswell Co. He married her and they farmed and raised a family in Ruffin, Rockingham, Co. John was killed in a RR accident abt. 1871 in NC. My grandfathetn that married Mary e. was James Henry Daniel, bastard son of Sallie Daniel.

On the 1880 Rockingham Co., NC Census; ED234 Oregonville Twp (includes Ruffin); 4 June; p.11;
Household 85:
DANIEL, James H.; White, male, 18, Farmer, b.NC, Father: b.NC, Mother: b.NC.
………, Mary E.; W, f, 39, Sister; NC, NC, NC (not the Mary E you asked about) (plus 4 farm laborers).
1900 Rockingham Co., NC Census; ED83 Ruffin; 20 June; p. 14A;

June 22, 2007 at 12:54 am #27118Thanks…The Mary E listed as sister was his sister . The Mary E in 1900 is the line I’m lost on. That Mary E [b.1869] mother was a Martha Wilson also born in NC/ I originally thought James may have married his sister but found they were two different people. I “think” her father was John Wilson from Tenn. My father said his mother was a dirt poor NA with a gypsy like traveling group when grandad met her abt,1874-5 in Caswell/Rockingham co.
June 22, 2007 at 12:54 am #27119The Joseph P. Daniel was my father. He and siblings all had strong NA physical features
June 22, 2007 at 12:54 am #27157Gene,
1860 Cherokee Co., NC Census; Shoal Creek District; 14 July; p.76;
Household 1190:
John WILSON, 24, m, W, Farmer, $0, $50, (born) Monroe Co., Tenn
Martha…….., 20, f, W, b. Haywood Co., NC.
MARY J…….., 4 months old, f, W, Fanning Co., Ga.
This Wilson family appears to be the same as the John Wilson family in 1870 Cocke Co., Tenn.
comparing the above 1860 census to the 1900 Rockingham census, this Mary J. Wilson, b. 1860 GA, is not the same as your Mary E. Wilson.
The following info could substanciate some of the family info you have, in that Martha Wilson worked for Sina Wright, who died during the 1870s and was not in William L Wright’s 1880 household. Martha’s daughter Mary’s age is within the normal ‘census age variation’ and is in the same area where James H. Daniel lived in 1880.
1870 Rockingham Co., NC Census; Oregonville Twp #2; 30 June; p.35; P.O. Ruffin, NC; Household 267:
Wrigh(t), Sina R., 69, f, W, – , $2500, $500, NC.
……….., William L., 43, m, W, farmer, NC.
Fitzgerald, (no 1st name), 12, m, W, attending school, NC.
…………., James O., 11, m, W, attending school, NC.
WILSON, Martha, 30, f, W, Domestic Servant, NC.
……….., William, 7, m, W, NC.
……….., MARY, 2, f, W, NC.
