I’m new here… just found out part of my heritage is extinct. It made quite an impression on me….
September 15, 2015 at 5:50 pm #37696Yes, they are the noisiest of all Ancestors to have.
September 15, 2015 at 5:50 pm #37697Welcome cuz!
The history books may say we are extinct… they also say Columbus ‘discovered’ America.
When my sister was in school 20 years ago her teacher threatened to fail her because she would not write this on a test. She told the teacher in front of the class that “you can’t discover a place that already has people living there”. I’ll teach my daughters their own history, and I’m learning more and more of it from people here.
Lynn, you are the first person I’ve met here who shares Hungerford ancestors. My connection is Drybread-> Wheatley-> Cone-> Hungerford.

September 15, 2015 at 5:50 pm #37698Columbus was an evil man. My daughter lives on St Croix in the American Virgin Islands. The people there hate him. He destroyed the original people who lived there.
I found a publication that the Austin family has put out with a genealogy from every section of the United States. Who knew? http://www.afaoa.org
My 79 year old mother said to me today..” i always knew it” even though her family never spoke of their heritage because of the Jim Crow laws, She knew. I am working on this for her. She has begun to remember stories and now they make sense to her. I plan to go later this week with a pen and paper and take notes.
She knew the Hungerford side of her family. There is a castle in England. It is now a protected park. We have pictures. Some of my cousins have visited. One of my mothers 21 aunt/uncles did a Hungerford genealogy. So I learned a lot from her research about my mother fathers family. The Smithsonian Institute was started by a Hungerford who married a Smithson.
The Austins and Vaughans were much harder to find. My grandmother Leota Ester Hungerford (maiden name Austin) had 10 siblings. One of them settled in Utah and married a mormon. (Great Valley Austin) He changed his name to Grand Vernon Austin. I found his grand daughter inlays email address a couple years ago on a mormon genealogy web site. I scanned photos of her grandfather and his family and emailed them to her. Since then, she has worked fervently on the Austin side of the family. She has her religious reasons, but it serves to help me out. I appreciate why they have done to add to the family line . There are a few others who have also added to the genealogy of the Austins. There are stories and notes. I am not a writer, but reading all of the notes and history makes me want to write a book about the Austins. John Champness Astin Jr, who I am descended from, had a brother named Valentine. He had a daughter born to him. She is named after his mother Hannah. He gave his daughter to his mother, Hannah Honor Love. The note said that they believe that Valentines wife must have died and since she was an infant girl, he was not allowed to raise her or was urged by his church or community to give her to his mother. Im not quite sure which.
September 15, 2015 at 5:50 pm #37712Hi, everyone! I’m brand new here~ my name is Mary… My story in a nutshell~ I am participating in research for lupus medications and was given a free DNA test (23andMe), which shows that I have a full-blooded Native American in my ancestry… I’m told this ancestor probably lived during the Colonial era, here in Virginia…
I started researching my family lines and discovered I have a large amount of ancestors who actually settled many parts of Virginia, including Jamestown, parts of Southeastern Virginia and parts of WV and KY… This is all very new to me, as I did not grow up with my mother, and these kinfolk are on her side of my heritage… It’s very exciting, too!
I haven’t been able to find any information about a Native American in my direct lineage, but I’ve found a few clues… First, I found one of my family surnames on Walter Plecker’s crazy list~ the Kidds, in Albemarle, VA… My Kidds have been in NC and VA for a very long time, but I ran into a wall there… Just a few days ago, I found an Austin, from Virginia, named Elizabeth~ I show she was born in 1690, but there is no record of her parents, at least not that I can find… Elizabeth married into my Saunders line, which leads to my Kidd line~ she is a direct ancestor of mine…
Researching Elizabeth, and the Austin name in VA, led me here… Do any of you have any connection to any of the families I’ve mentioned?
Thanks so much for taking the time to read this!
September 15, 2015 at 5:50 pm #37717Where was she born? there are a lot of Elizabeths
September 15, 2015 at 5:50 pm #37718The earliest Austin I in my line came from England and was born in 1701. In England…so I have no idea
September 15, 2015 at 5:50 pm #37720I have no information on her city or county of birth; but, I do know she married, in 1710, in Christchurch, Middlesex, VA and died in Lancaster, VA…

September 15, 2015 at 5:50 pm #37971I noticed there are no DNA links to Elizabeth Austin on WikiTree. May, if you have a DNA sample you could upload it to WikiTree to find more DNA cousins.
September 15, 2015 at 5:50 pm #37974where do you recommend doing DNA tests?

If health is the ibggest focus 23andMe, if genealogy is the biggest focus, FTDNA. Ancestry is the last option, I wouldn’t rate it as high as the others, but it is still good. When the test are on sale for $79 is the best time.

Hi, I am told that I descended from Hannah Honor Love and John Austin. I had the autosomal DNA test done at Familytreedna.com and have uploaded those results to gedmatch.com under psettler63@gmail.com. My gedcom is posted there as well. I would like to see if our relation shows up. Thank you, Patsy Austin Settler (different Austin)
