This is one of the NA families we are trying to confirm or debunk. Grandma Minta says we are Blackfoot. Knowing some of the LAND and TIME history, there’s no telling which NDN line we have. Can anyone help.

Robert Clay b.1795 Va Married Sarah Setz(s)er b. 1820 NC
Araminta Clay b.1855 Floyd co. Ky married James Franklin Pinionb. 1844 Russel or Washington co VA (family legand of NA blood)(had pictures of family in regalia).

I think I can connect this line to the GOWN/GOIN families of Surry & Rockingham Co’s., NC and the adjacent Virginia counties.
I think I have found James F. Pinion/PENNION’s parents:
Thomas Pennion, b.abt. 1781 Surry Co., NC and
Martha “Patsey” GOWN (GOIN), b.abt. 1799 Patrick Co., Va,
on the 1850 Russell Co., Va Census listing James F. in their household.
Per that census, whose ‘Taker’ did us the favor of listing specific information about where they were born, they moved from Surry Co, NC to Grayson Co., Va to Washington Co., Va (only a couple of miles), where James F. was born.
I’ll post those specifics soon.

Thanks so much for the info. I’ll be waiting (im)patiently :):) for any other tidbits you throw my way.
I found a website that is devoted to Virginia maps starting in1776. It’s really cool. I have been going there and following the county line changes over the years. Also trying to read about what was going on at that time in history (local as well) so as to get a better grip on what was going on in the lives of our families.
Do you know of anyplace I can get hard copies of these maps???Would be cool to post them on the wall and “follow the trails”!

These Pinsons may not be the same family group, however, a lot of folks from SW VA went to Pike and maybe back and forth. The 1823 Pike list does have some interesting folks on it and is worth a look. Some names we are familiar with. Regrading Pinson, I have heard the story of Indian ancestors before from a Pinson descendant on another list.

Thanks for the website link. I think I found 2or3 possible family members, Pinson/Damron…..Just one more tidbit to add and research. The link to NA on the Pinion/Pinson/pennion side, “I think”, came in from either the Gown/Goin/Gowen or Clay/Setzer. I still in the process of trying to make a positive connection. I also have NA stories from the Collins/Damron side of the family…….One thing at a time though…:)Thanks again!

Your welcome, Debi. When you get around to it, I think I saw some posts on this site on Damrons. Maybe Aggie Owl???? I noted the name because it is another one from my area of Mingo/Logan Co. VA/WV & Pike Co. KY. Actually, you could add Lawrence & Floyd KY & McDowell & Wyoming WV to my areas of interest….. I know I see a lot of Damron posts in Logan Co. WV.

Depending on which area of Ky we’re looking at, DAMRON is also DAMERON and DAMERAN, sometimes with a double “m” , but have always appeared to be the same family line.

Felicia’s Blackfoot are Clays. Their story is that they went to upstate New York and came back to the VA border, which is interesting considering that’s the most documented place the Saponi migrated to. I’ve heard stories of Tuscarora people who went to NY and then came back to NC.
The Floyd Co., Ky CLAYs can be taken back into 1790s and 1780s Halifax Co., Va., CLAYs, MORRISONs, PORTERs and earlier into deeper Culpepper/Amelia/Orange Co, Va., CLAYs, WILSONs, JAMES, NICHOLSs – it can be a bit frustrating, but one step and piece of information at a time, we’ll put all the pieces of the puzzle together.
