Native American genealogy research from the Piedmont of NC & VA
My daughter is a 4th grade student in NC (Falls Lake Academy) and has been assigned a project to research the Haliwa-Saponi tribe. One of the things they are looking for is information about what the tribal settlements may have looked like before European arrival. So things like what were the homes like, what was their language and/or religions, did they farm or were they hunter-gatherers? We are having trouble locating any of this information, could anyone point us in the right direction?
Thank you for your assistance!
Hello Sarah,
Have you tried reaching out to the Haliwa-Saponi Tribe? http://haliwa-saponi.com/contact/
When you say “what was their language and/or religion”, realize you are talking about a people who are still alive, it isn’t past tense. Generalizations around religion can be hard to make – this is often a deeply personal subject.
The best way to learn is to speak to someone in person. However, there are several Internet resources out there with some of this information, a simple Wikipedia search for example:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sappony
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haliwa-Saponi
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tutelo_language
In terms of homes/settlements there is information out there if you take the time to search carefully. Islands in rivers are often selected as settlement sites. Homes were typically circular structures made by bending young trees to form a frame. A group of homes was often surrounded by a pallisade wall. Some information regarding Saponi settlement locations is available on this page: http://www.saponitown.com/timeline.htm
Hope this helps point you in the right direction for your daughter’s learning.
peace
-Marc
