My grandfathers grandpa on his mothers side is John “jahue” Goins. Jack Goins has traced this line back to a Zephaniah Goins 1800-1810. Anyone else have information pertaining to this line of Goins.
June 5, 2007 at 7:49 pm #26845Yes, but I’d ask you to post or email me your line connecting to Zephaniah.
June 5, 2007 at 7:49 pm #26851This is what I have so far, dont know if its exact because it is not my research. Jack Goins and my grandfather Charles Willis are cousins. Jacks GG Grandpa William Goins and my Grandfathers Great Grandpa Fielder Goins were brothers. Fielder Goins and Isabel Fisher had children and John “Jahue” Goins was one of them. Jahue and Rhoda had children together and there daughter Rebekah Ann “Beccan” Lawson was my grandfathers mother.
Per an email conversation with Jack Goins
Yes both my ggg Hezekiah Minor and Zephaniah Goins lived there 1800-1810

Per the conversation above I asked Jack if he had traced any of our Goins family back to Goinstown and I posted his reply.

Hello Jack – Have you traced any of our descendants back to Goinstown?
I havent found any census reports of Rebecca Ann Lawson and her children but my grandfather Charles Logan Willis is her son and he is still living today at the age of 74. Rebecca Lawson daughter of Jahue and Rhoda married Logan Willis my grandfathers father.
June 5, 2007 at 7:49 pm #26869Interesting list, here:
http://www.freeafricanamericans.com/revolution.htm
snippet from same:
Zephaniah Gowens was taxable in Henry County from 1783 to 1796 and in 1802: listed with 2 tithables in 1794 [PPTL, 1782-1830, frames 159, 302, 402, 428, 504], taxable in Patrick County from 1797 to 1799 [PPTL, 1791-1823, frames 234, 268]. He was about seventy-six years old and living in Hawkins County, Tennessee on 18 December 1834 when he applied for a Revolutionary War pension, stating that he had entered the service in Henry County [M805, reel 368, frame 0134].
Patrick and Henry County are my family’s neck of the woods (where I grew up). My lines mingled with the Goins and Lawsons & lived near some Minors in Patrick CO.
I’m fascinated by Goinstown. But how does one know which families in that area were “Goinstown Indians”?
June 5, 2007 at 7:49 pm #26870I have no idea beeleaf. I’m only 32 and as a child my dad always told me I our family was Spanish, Portuguese and Indian. No one ever really new the truth untill Jack Goins came out with his book and revealed some of the mysteries.
I have pictures of John “jahue” Goins, Rhoda, Rebecca Ann “beccan” Lawson and Nancy J. Wallen. You can tell by looking at the pictures of Rhoda and her kids that they are definately not white and also Jahue but never had any facts.
I’m just searching along with the rest of the family trying to make sense of our dark skin, hair and blue eyes. After being told that my ancestors were labeled Melungion I started to get a laugh because both my dad and myself married and had kids with Apache/Mexican women. Just another race to add to our family tree.
Honestly I dont know, hopefully Bill will shed some light on the situation. All that I know to be as fact is that Goins were traced as far back as Goinstown, Jack has proven us to be of Melungion descent. Aside from the Goins already being mixed you can trace Isabell Fisher back to being of a mixed race and also Rhoda Lawson being of the same. Then you trace back his dads side and get the same thing. I guess it will always be a mystery.
The funny thing is that my daughter is the darkest and shows more of the strong features then any of our boys and thats the same with all my grandfathers family except for him. Thats why I’m glad that I found this place, sooner or later I will find the truth. My family has been labled as white, mullato, melungion and indian on census reports, hopefully sooner or later I will meet a person to shed the light on it all.
I’m getting ready to do DNA on myself, unfortunately it will only show all of the male Willis’s on my side of the family but atleast that will be one family line out of the way. One of the craziest things of it all is that after my grandfather and grandmother met and went to get married they wouldnt marry them because my grandpa had no birth certificate, SSN – Nada. They had to go back to Black Water Virginia and pertain it all. I have found no records after Rhoda Lawson’s kids or my grandads fathers side. They must have all burnt up or disapeared.
June 5, 2007 at 7:49 pm #26873Charlie,
I would like to jump in here…looking at the names above in the posting where you can access the rootsweb database, click on Zephaniah Goins and see father John born 1727…child # 5 is shown as Elizabeth…married to Hezekiah Minor in 1795..
See this database? with Children of John Minter and Susannah Williams?
son Hezekiah Minter married to Elizabeth Goins in 1795?
http://webpages.charter.net/chamberlayne/minter/min1.htm
Some time ago I posted a Minter/Minor post which nobody responded to..maybe I didn’t clarify enough..If you search here on the forum for Minter you will find it. There has to be something here but at the moment I’m lost in trying to sort it out. Hard with an 8 year old niece trying to play with me as I type.

June 5, 2007 at 7:49 pm #26880Howdy.
I am a descendant of the Riddles and am therefore a distant cousin (just like most of us are here, or so it seems 🙂 ).
Do you have a copy of Jack’s book? If not, I recommend you get a copy.

Pat Spurlock Elder’s book is very informative as well.
June 5, 2007 at 7:49 pm #27400Justin,
My Great-great Grandparents are Fielder Goins and Ibby Fisher. My Father was David Jackson Goins, Jr. (called DJ by everybody), his Father was David Jackson Goins, His Father was William Goins, his Father was Fielder Goins. I can remember my Grandfather talking about his Uncle Jahue when I was a kid growing up in the 50’s and 60’s. Jahue had a twin brother named Jacob.
My mother was Ruby Elizabeth Willis, Daughter of Larkin Willis and Rosa Jane Collins, Larkin’s Father was James Madison Dalton Willis, his Father was James Willis.
I just talked to Jack Goins a couple of weeks ago at the MHA get together in Big Stone gap, VA.
I grew up in South Carolina and I currently live in Pensacola, Florida. Contact me at lkgcheng@yahoo.com and lets see if we are also related on the Willis side.

June 5, 2007 at 7:49 pm #27420Bill,
Correct me if I’m wrong, not having my notes here at work, but isn’t Zephaniah Goins the father of Oliver Goins who married my gr.gr. aunt Rebecca Jane Cole? I’ve discussed this with Jack Goins also but it’s been awhile. And yes, as you can see, I’m still around, just been busy property hunting and preparing to move.

June 5, 2007 at 7:49 pm #27421Bill,
Okay, here’s a snippet from one of Jack’s web articles ….
“Oliver Goins, born 1848 in Hancock County, Tennessee and a grandson of Zephaniah Goins migrated to Harlan County KY and married Rebecca Cole. Some from this Cole family claim to be part Indian. Some of these were original Melungeons and others were descendants of the Melungeons. No written records have been found where any of these families were called Melungeons in the areas they migrated to, which is very good evidence this name was given to their forbearers as stated in writing by the old witnesses.”
http://www.geocities.com/ourmelungeons/history
I stand corrected, Oliver was a grandson. Oliver was rumored to have “frozen to death”. I do not know under what circumstances or when.
Oliver and Aunt Becky’s son was killed in WWI in The Lost Battalion 31 days before the end of WWI. His name is on the Lee Co. VA War Memorial in Jonesville, VA.

June 5, 2007 at 7:49 pm #27444All,
I found this on the Goins family on WorldConnect. If it’s already posted, I apologize. I’ve also emailed it to Jack Goins for verification as I consider him the “expert” on the Goins family.

June 5, 2007 at 7:49 pm #27476Saj, there are some very familiar names in the link you posted. My mom is from “Leatherwood”. Many of those surnames “leaked” into Patrick, Franklin, Floyd, Stokes, & other near-by counties. Many of the families still live there. My mom used to babysit a Goins child.
June 5, 2007 at 7:49 pm #27477Jim, was there more than one Shadrack Goins or did he marry more than once? The court doc info I was looking at yesterday indicated that 1806 Patrick County Shadrack’s widow was named Hannah.
This is just a nit-picky pet peeve (about the info in that link), but Patrick County did not exist in 1727 or 1729, where some of those folks were said to be born.
June 5, 2007 at 7:49 pm #27481Thanks Beeleaf.
Here is something that caught my interest for the witnessing of Robert Allen will.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/
But continuing on to scroll down the page to find the link to tons of research,
: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gowenrf
If you find the search engine, Zephaniah comes up….I found 184 hits for Allen..so I have a lot of reading to do. But just within the first several, I see that researchers connect Allen to Goin, Gowen, etc. There is much to be learned from here! Saj
