My name is Dwayne Wolfe. I’m writing this on behalf of my mother Perdeitha Evans-Smith. My moms Evans side are from all areas of Mecklenburg/ Brunswick ( South Virginia) but many Migrated to Petersburg and to New York in 1900s. My Grandpa Sterling Alfred Evans always told her he was a descendant of the Blackfoot which never made sense to me when researching. Blackfoot Natives are from the Plains not Virginia. When I found out during research recently the Saponi descendants called themselves Blackfoot and the Saponi lived in the same areas of Virginia of our Family per census, I knew I had possibly found the answer to our family’s Blackfoot mystery origin and me and my moms Native DNA origin. Hoping to find other Saponi with Evans surname to connect with.
March 6, 2024 at 3:27 pm #67239Hi I’ve learned a little more about my family and it seems the Colemans were in Brunswick County, VA in the mid-1800s and then moved to Roanoke district, Halifax County by the 1870s. Also, I’ve discovered a lot of DNA matches with Evans in their trees… so maybe there is a connection? I have yet to be able to expand my tree past my great-great-grandmother (a Coleman) but might her parents I believe were a Coleman and a Gundy from Brunswick County.
Do you by chance have any Gundys in your tree (Sallie H Gundy/Sallie Gundy)?
March 6, 2024 at 4:23 pm #67240Yes I’m related to all Colemans who are related to roye and Moore families. They have origins in Mecklenburg, VA. My mom has a dna cousin Lachelle Kane who descends from a Charles Coleman born 1923 who mother was a Roye and her mother was a Moore. My evans are connected to the Moores via marriage of Peter Evans to Irina June Moore my 3rd great grandmother. My mom also has Gundy dna family from Essex Virginia per census. I didn’t see A Sallie Gundy in any of their trees though. My mom is on ancestrydna under Perdeitha smith. Perdeitha was her birth name. She added the E.

Here are some SaponiTown threads that reference Southside VA Evans in Mecklenburg:

September 16, 2024 at 5:13 am #67411I am a descendant of Charles Evan’s, Jane the younger, and Jane the elder. My ancestors follow down the line to today as Native Americans. Charles Evan’s is Upper Congeree, and Shakori according to familysearch.com.
It is my hope that people who are from Mecklenburg County, and the Bracey community will get in contact with me.
There are many names that can connect to people here, so feel free to reach out to me. I have been researching my family since 1994, and Virginia’s Native American history since 2004. I have a ton of research to assist with your searches. Also, to connect with other lost family member’s.September 16, 2024 at 5:52 am #67412Hello Felicia,
My great grandfather was Peter Evans, his was was Abraham Evans and mother Elizabeth. Abraham’s mother per 1870 census was Cary or Carrie Evans. All from Flat Creek and Buckhorn areas of Mecklenburg VA. Census shows my Evans family even lives in a place called Saponi. Also Boydton was another place they lived.
