January 2, 2004 at 5:24 pm #8824Are you interested in the Quisenberrys left behind in Orange Co?
Have 5 males (similiar names as your list) & 14 female marriages, (many appear to be dau’s of males on your list) from around the 1790s to 1810 period in “Marriages of Orange County”.
Have (James) Frederick Quesenberry (1793) and George’s 1820 marriage listed in “Montgomery County Marriages”.
Sounds like you have the particulars on these last two but I’d be glad to list any or all of these here if you think it’s any help. Bill
January 2, 2004 at 5:24 pm #8829Bill, much of our info is stuff we found on-line but we don’t have sources…….. so, yes, any info, especially with location of the varifying records would be very helpful. Thank you.

January 2, 2004 at 5:24 pm #8830From “A Brief of Wills and Marriages In Montgomery and Fincastle Counties, Virginia, 1733-1831”
“Quesenberry, Frederick, and Molly (Mary in Marr. Return) Phillips, dau. Tobias Phillips. Moses Quesenberry, sur. Mar. by Robert Jones – Dec 20, 1793.
“Quesenberry, George (son of Frederick) and Sally Cox, dau. Frederick Holliday, surety – Feb 15, 1820.”
…………………….
From “Marriages of Orange County Virginia, 1747-1810” by Catherine Lindsay Knorr, c.1959 :
“2 December 1776. James Quisenberry and Jane Burrows. Found in Deed Book 17. Both of St. Thomas’ Parish. Notation: by Banns. (Jane b. 5 July 1759, dau. Thomas Burruss and his wife Frances Tandy. 14 T 119.) p. 7.
“22 May 1783. George Quisenberry and Jane Daniel. Sur. Vivion Daniel. Both of St. Thomas’ Parish. p. 12.
“22 June 1802. George Quisenberry and Margaret Reynolds, dau. William Reynolds, who consents. Sur. John Young. Wit. Robert Young. p. 57.
“14 August 1805. Moses Quisenberry and Milly Durrett, dau. Joel Durrett, who consents and is surety. Wit. J. N. Assam and James Quisenberry. Moses of Louisa County; his guardian, Henry Quisenberry, consents for him. p. 66.
“17 October 1805. Aaron Quisenberry and Henrietta Reynolds, dau. William Reynolds, who consents. Sur. George Quisenberry. Wit. George Quisenberry, Jr. p. 67.”
……………………….
There is some inter-relatedness found here so I’ll include some marriages of some of the people mentioned in the above, from the same source as above, and some of their relatives.
(The Herndon & Wright people -below- are related to my 4th & 5th grt-grandparents –
4th – George Bledsoe WRIGHT, b. 1762 Orange Co, d.1835 Shelby Co., Ky, marr 1: Della RAGLEN. Marr 2: Sarah BEASLEY.
5th – William (s/o John) WRIGHT, b.1729 Westmoreland Co, d. 1833 Orange Co., Va, marr 1: Mary BLEDSOE. Marr 2: Rachel PERRY.
The Beasley, Bledsoe & Perry descended from Long Hunter families of same name and claimed to be mixed Indian descent.)
“10 February 1774. Joseph Reynolds and Susanna Wright. Found in Deed Book 17. Notation: by Banns. Both of St. Thomas’ Parish. p. 2.
“22 May 1777. William Reynolds and Nancy Nixon. Found in Deed Book 17. Both in St. Thomas’ Parish. Notation: by Banns. p. 5.
“13 August 1784. Aaron Reynolds and Caty Chambers, over 21, who writes her own consent. Sur. James Adams. p. 14.
“27 July 1797. William Reynolds and Peggy Rumsey, of age, dau. Thomas Rumsey, who consents. Sur. Reuben SCOTT. Wit. James TAYLOR. p. 44.”
(I included this because of a related continuum among these families. This James Taylor, (from Albermarle Co.?), is related to someone else on this board. The Adams figures into this too, but don’t yet know how.)
“24 January 1803. William Reynolds and Jane Quisenberry, dau. George Quisenberry, who consents and is surety. (William, son of Joseph and Susann (Wright) Reynolds and grandson of Joseph and Elizabeth (Herndon) Reynolds.) p. 59.
“27 November 1809. William Reynolds, Jr., and Joice Quisenberry, dau Sally Quisenberry, who consents. Sur. Robert Young. Wit. Aaron Quisenberry and Robert Adams. (William, Jr., son of William Reynolds, Sr. and his wife Nancy (Nixon) Reynolds, grandson of Joseph and Elizabeth (Herndon) Reynolds.) p. 76.”
Bear with me…….
There are several marriages of daughters of William Wright (b.1729) to RHODES men from Albermarle County, witnessed by the same James TAYLOR as above, linking BENNETT, BURTON, DELANEY, PEARSON & SHEPHERD people to the above Reynolds/Wright/Herndon/Quisenberry group, at least as neighbors or friends, maybe relatives. Techteach has a RHODES from a generation earlier in Penn., who may have been from Va.
I think, might be wrong, Brenda Collins Dillon has a BENNETT.
Peace.

“3 November 1788. Rice PENDLETON and Elizabeth Quisenberry, dau. John Quisenberry, who consents. Sur. George Quisenberry. p. 22.”

“3 July 1804. John NEWMAN and Sidnah Quisenberry, dau. George Quisenberry. Sur. Moses HAWKINS. Wit. George Quisenberry, Jr. p. 63.”
“10 August 1805. Henry GATEWOOD and Amy Quisenberry, dau, Moses Quisenberry, deceased. Sur. Moses Quisenberry, who makes oath Amy is over 21. Her brother? p. 66.”
(my note: the “Her brother?” is part of the quote.
Henry GATEWOOD is a descendant of Henry Gatewood, d.1777 Spotsylvania Co. Edward HERNDON witnessed his Will. This Henry who marr’d Amy Q., is related to the FOSTER, COLLINS, SPARKS, LEWIS & HERNDON families of Spotsylvania and Orange Counties of the early to mid 1700s who are some of my ancestors, also. This LEWIS line connects to Elisha WALLER, Long Hunter, and also to the Pocahantas & Niketti Powhatan lines.)
“25 September 1805. Achilles DURRETT and Lydia Quisenberry. Sur. Moses Quisenberry, who makes oath Lydia is over 21; no relationship stated. p. 67.”
“21 May 1807. James JOHNSON and Nancy Quisenberry, of age, dau. Mary Quisenberry, who consents. Sur. SPENCER ATKINS. Wit. Henry Quisenberry. Married 22 May by Rev. Robert Jones. P. 71.”
(my note: This James is a probable brother or nephew of the Isaac Johnson, Jr., who marr’d Elizabeth TERRILL in 1795 Orange Co.)
“8 March 1810. Joseph H. SCHOOLER and Dolly Quisenberry. Sur. Henry Quisenberry, who makes oath Dolly is over 21; no relationship stated. Married 13 March by Rev. Jeremiah Chandler. p. 77.”
(some Chandlers are related to SMITHs and DEARs who are related to Quisenberrys.)
……………………….
I think I gave these next two to you already, but just in case:
“24 January 1803. William REYNOLDS and Jane Quisenberry, dau. George Quisenberry, who consents and is surety. (William son of Joseph and Susanna (Wright) Reynolds and grandson of Joseph and Elizabeth (Herndon) Reynolds.) p.59.”
“27 November 1809. William REYNOLDS, Jr. and Joice Quisenberry, dau. Sally Quisenberry, who consents. Sur. Robert Young. Wit. Aaron Quisenberry and Robert Adams. (William Jr., son of William Reynolds Sr., and his wife Nancy Nixon, grandson of Joseph and Elizabeth (Herndon) Reynolds.) p. 76.”

January 2, 2004 at 5:24 pm #8835Dreaminghawk,
See the posts for “John Smith and Lucy Sylvie” on the “Share Genealogy” section for another tie-in to your Quisenberrys and several more of interest.
The question of the John Taylor who witnessed so many marriages is solved – he was the court clerk !
🙂
January 2, 2004 at 5:24 pm #8951Found that line I was looking for on-line with footnotes and it all seems to checkout.
1. George Quesenberry Sr b. 1748 was son of
2. Aaron Q b. 1712 Crolin City, King George Co, Va married Joyce Dudley
3. Humphery Q b. 1654 Va married Mary Muse (Mewes)
4. John Questenbury b. 1627 Va married Ann Pope
5. Thomas Questenbury b. 1608 in Kent, England….. came to America in 1624….. married Unknown after 1624.
My father’s lines are very intertwined……. besides 2 Quesenberry lines, I have 3 Cox sisters marrying into 3 different lines and it looks like a total of 5 Phillips lines…… 3 siblings, a child and a grandchild marry into my various lines……. the original Dalton settler, Timothy Dalton Sr b. 1680 Wales d. 1767 Albemarle co Va had 2 known children….. Timothy Jr b. 1710 who brings down my Dalton line and Elizabeth Dalton married James Bobbitt, who’s daughter, Diannah b. 1730 marries Jonathan Jennings and produces 2 Jennings lines. One comes back into my Dalton line and the other into Simpkins line by way of Phillips.
My chart looks like an M C Escher drawing LOL

January 2, 2004 at 5:24 pm #8952Dreaminghawk:
There are Phillips in my extended family tree too. They were with the earliest groups to arrive in Jackson County, IA, in 1837, along with two other names that appear in my family, Mitchell and Clark.

January 2, 2004 at 5:24 pm #23820It’s funny how names familiar to my family here in MO keep popping up in the same places where my family originated…The Quesenberry’s are cousins of mine in Pulaski County, MO.
The Quesenberry’s I know claim a link to George Washington…I don’t know if there is any truth to it or not.
January 2, 2004 at 5:24 pm #30597refreshing for new cousin
January 2, 2004 at 5:24 pm #30599This is getting weird. My ex wife, maiden name Phillips was from Hillsville VA in Carroll Co. (next to pulaski) Her mothers maiden name was Quesenberry also in Hillsville VA.
Furthermore, I worked some volunteer charity work with a girl in California whose father was a Quesenberry also from Pulaski Co. VA.
Apperently, there was a fued between the Quesenberry’s and the Goads in Carroll Co. that ended up with a shoot out in the courthouse and a manhunt. At one time they were supposed to make a movie out of it.
January 2, 2004 at 5:24 pm #30603Hey Jack,
Hope you don’t hold it against me that I am probably cousin to your ex many times over 😉
There are several threads here that discuss the Hillsville Courthouse shootout. Main participants were Allens, Edwards vs Goads, Foster, Samuels. I have the 1929 book written by Sidna Allen. My Daltons connect to all these families.
January 2, 2004 at 5:24 pm #30605My ex was and still is to this day, a barefoot, hard livin’, hot tempered, Flathead descendent, who will smile at you and all the while be holding a butcher knife behind her back hoping you will get close enough for her to use it. I can’t count the times I had to pull her off of some big guys back where she had jumped on him for one reason or another and started beating him in the head. Most of the time I had to fight him because he wanted to beat on her and I wasn’t about to let him.
My ex had 11 brothers, sisters and step sisters. Her Dad’s idea of a baby sitter was to tie them to chairs with ropes so they would be still be there when got back from the store in town. He had to curtail this method once they moved from Hillsville to the east end of Richmond because city folk don’t take too kindly to tying your kids up.
I went to Hillsville once to visit her relatives with her and never went back. Her Mother was a nice woman (a Quesenberry) but, she lived in a cabin with an outhouse and would reach down and grab a copperhead by the tail and “whip it” in such a way it would snap it’s neck. She had remarried to a fella with the last name Goad.
Her Grandma Phillips lived on Phillips Rd. in a cabin that looked like its right out of the back of the Beverly Hillbillies show. Grandpa was buried on the side next to the house. We drove down the road and her Grandma was standing on the poarch barefooted, in a flower sack dress with her gray hair all the way down past her butt and toting a double barrelled shotgun. Naturally, I went to pull in the yard off the road and my ex started screaming, “Don’t stop! Don’t stop!” “Why?” I replied. “`Cause Granny don’t see so well and see will shoot us if she don’t recognize the car!”, she yelled. I didn’t stop and we never did visit Granny. I asked her why she was standing on the front poarch with a shotgun and my ex said that her Granny would stand out there waiting for a rabbit and would shoot it for supper.
I know this sounds far fetched and I would not believe it if I hadn’t witnessed these events with my own eyes.
January 2, 2004 at 5:24 pm #30641Eyaaaeee. What the heck did I wander in here for?
