Hello,
I have been interested in genealogy for a long time and got into it about six years ago. Part of the reason was to prove/disprove family stories of whether or not we have some Blackfoot in us.
My grandmother on my dad’s side is reported to be at least a quarter Blackfoot, and was said to have been a very beautiful woman. I inherited her high cheek bones and lumpy knees.
Anyhow, her name was Allie Frances Logan, and on her maternal side, her grandfather was a Hiram Meeks (born around 1838 and died around 1887. I have heard Granny say her people were from Powell Valley, TN., but they lived in Knox Co., KY.
I am at a brick wall for Hiram Meeks, but he married an Elizabeth Wright. Her father wasJoel Wright, born abt 1805 in Wayne Co, KY, and I traced Elizabeth’s direct line of Wrights to England. Elizabeth’s mother was named Esther Calhoun, born about 1815 in KY. I have a brick wall on her, as well.
If I can have any help on busting through or at least going around these brick walls, it would be appreciated. Thanks in Advance.

Not sure if we could connect up, but there were Meeks in my hometown who turned out to be related to me. Their mother would have nothing to do with the Indian family of her husband as her children were growing up – one was in my class and one in my sister’s class, but then, my family dissed my NA ancestors too. Only 3 years ago did I find out I was related, because my gggrandparents had nothing to do with the NA side of my ggggrandparents. Does this Meeks family have the Blackfoot ID?

Tech,
I am not sure about the Meeks family, since I have a brick wall at Hiram Meeks, but yes, these are my gr-great grandparents, Elizabeth Wright and Hiram Meeks. These are the grandparents of my grandmother that claimed to have Blackfoot ID. Her mother, Sara “Sally” Ann Meeks, was said to be half Blackfoot.
After her first husband, John Frank Logan died, I think Sally re-married, but am not sure about that.
Thanks for replying. It would be neat if our Meeks did connect.
This grandmother of mine was also supposed to have some French blood in her. Were your Meeks French?
Thanks again for replying.
December 7, 2005 at 7:59 pm #18017I don’t know about the Meeks. I am not exactly sure how they connect to be honest. I don’t find them on any of the family genealogies. I might even be confusing my Sinkeys with other families that I have found around the bunch in PA who have names beginning with S. But I thought it was Sinkey. It was a long time ago and at the time, I had no idea that I was one of those families of “Indians.” Like I said, my family moved away and had nothing to do with the relatives who frequently did things like smoking pipes. But I keep running into the name as I have looked for my people. It’s really interesting to me to have someone with that name have the Blackfoot ID. There just has to be something substantial to that ID, given how many people had it.
I don’t have French blood, but I have relatives named French who also are mixed.

December 7, 2005 at 7:59 pm #18019Welcome, Anita,
Yes, they did come to Ky from the Powell River Valley.
I’m still working on them. I have Meeks and Irwin/Irwen/Ervin also.
I rocognize that you’re looking for Hiram’s parents, but how much information do you have on his immediate family?
Have you only found his family on the 1880 census?
Bill
December 7, 2005 at 7:59 pm #18039Hey Bill!
I don’t know much about Hiram’s family, except that he married Elizabeth Wright, and that Sara “Sally” Ann Meeks was one of his children (I know there was more – I haven’t listed them yet in my PAF), and she was my great-grandmother. One of the weird family tales I heard was that Sara would visit my grandma, her daughter once every twenty years. No wonder my grandmother was a bit strange. I don’t know if time got away from Sara or what.
I have used the LDS site and Rootsweb to do a lot of research, since I live about a five-hour drive from the rest of the family and any information. I got my information from an aunt that did genealogy until she got sick (breast cancer, twice).
I have not looked at the 1880 census for Hiram yet but will, when I get the chance. I have a few chores to run – we have a winter advisory, and I want to get a few things done before the snow comes. We’re supposed to get four to six inches of snow by tomorrow afternoon.
Thanks for replying, Bill.

December 7, 2005 at 7:59 pm #18040Anita,
I’m already ‘snow-bound’ with about 5 inches on the ground and snowfall of 1 and a half inches an hour and it’s expected to snow all night 🙂 Five inches won’t keep anyone snowed in but with the continuing snow, it’s not wise to venture out.
Found in ancestry.com’s “One World Tree”, maybe your Aunt’s work.

For what it’s worth, I think Martha “Patsey” Meeks was a Harris and is Hiram’s mother, with both Hiram and Patsey shown incorrectly as Harrises on the 1850 census. However, no proof.
Samuel Meeks was next door in 1840 Pulaski Co., Ky but had no male children in his household, altho he’s old enough to be Hiram’s grandfather, I wouldn’t jump to that conclusion without more info.
According to one family tree:
Samuel Meeks, b.abt. 1788 Blountsville, Sullivan Co., Tenn; m’d about 1807 Sullivan Co., Tenn: Nancy Snodgrass, b. 22 April 1785 Washington Co., Va; d. 1845 Blountsville, Sullivan Co., Tenn.
Tree shows Samuel Meeks’s ‘possible’ parents came from Penn, but I don’t think this is correct. There is some obvious inaccuarcies in that tree so I don’t think it will serve as a good ‘map’. I’ll see what I can develope.
The Snodgrass line includes ELDER, KINCANNON, GLENN, BORLAND, PATTERSONs who came to Tenn from Chester & Cumberland, Pa via Frederick and Washington Co’s, Va.

We are getting snowed in here now. It started snowing about four o’clock, and it is still going. My hubby left at 4:45 and got home about 7:15 – and it usually is a 45 minute trip home for him! We are keeping warm and dry. I got some extra straw for the ducks and chickens and they are snuggled in it in their shed.
Still at a brick wall, concerning Hiram Meeks’ parents, but did find a list of his children on Rootsweb, and I found out that Hiram was a Union soldier in the Civil War. I will have to look up his infantry number and such. But no info on the parents. I wonder where the full-blooded Saponi/Blackfoot came from if not Elizabeth Wright. The surnames on my Grandmother’s Wright side of the family are Wright, Calhoun, Peyton, Ellis, Hawkins, Edwards, Hill, Puryor (Pryor?), Merryton, Underwood, Bussell, and this is our direct lines, as far as I know.
Thanks again for sticking with me and pointing me in the right direction. I tried going around the brick wall by using Hiram’s children’s names, but no luck.
I tried :
George Baldwin Meeks b. May, 1868
Mahala b. between 1871-1877
James b. 1873
Sofronia b. 1876
Sara “Sally” Ann (my gr-grandmother) b. 1887
Samuel Lethiat b. ?
William b. ?
I may try the spouses of these children another time.
Thanks for helping me. Hopefully the snow will be gone before long!

December 7, 2005 at 7:59 pm #18051Did you find Joel Wright on any census records?
Bill
December 7, 2005 at 7:59 pm #18057Believe it or not, I do have a Joel (S?) Wright in my genealogy research. born around 1806 in Wayne Co., KY. He was married to an Esther Calhoun, born around 1815 in KY. I don’t have any death dates on either of them – yet, but will do some more research on them. I have a brick wall with Esther Calhoun.
Joel’s parents were Jesse Wright and Doshea (Doshua) Peyton.
Jesse’s parents were Isaac Wright, b. 1740, King William Co., VA, d 1807, Amherst Co., VA; and Susannah Ellis, b. 1744, Henrico Co., VA, d. 1821, Bourbon Co., KY. Doshea’s parents were Phillip Peyton, b. 1726, Stratford Co, VA, d. 1795, Lincoln Co., KY; and Winnifred Bussell, b. around 1728, Stafford Co., VA, d. date unknown, in Lincoln Co., KY.
Isaac’s parents were Francis Wright, b. around 1709, in Louisa Co., VA and d. 7 September 1767 in Amherst Co., VA; and Mary Hawkins, b. 1713 in Yorke Co., VA, d. around 1773, in Amherst Co., VA.
Francis E.’s parents were Francis Wright, Jr, b. around 1685 in Lancaster Co., VA, d. around 1743 in Westmoreland Co., VA; and Mary Ann Edwards, b. around 1689 in Lancaster Co., Va and d. around 1740 in Lancaster Co., VA.
I can go back further if you’d like. I may have a few mistakes in my research, but so far, this is what I have. I wonder if this is where my Saponi/Blackfoot ancestry comes in?
My Aunt Othella did a lot of the research, and it looks like some distant relatives did some research, too.
I hope this helps you out in helping me out.
Keep warm and toasty – we are! Thanks again, in advance!

I found his father Jesse and Grandfather on the 1810 Wayne Co., KY census, but didn’t find him, his father or Grandfather in any later censuses in Wayne County. I have looked in the Knox Co, KY census, but have had no luck. In my research, I found Joel to be born around 1806 in Wayne Co., KY. I could be wrong, but that is what I have. Joel’s mother was Doshea/Doshua Peyton.
Thanks for helping me out thus far. Unlike my Cherokee lines, I can trace back my Wrights, even if they may not be Blackfoot/Saponi.

December 7, 2005 at 7:59 pm #20995Hello cousin, I was wondering about the Green connection from yours and Dusty’s lines of Greens.
December 7, 2005 at 7:59 pm #21001http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SHOW&db=ullom3kids&recno=8605
This is a link that Dusty gave me regarding the Green family.
Me and my memory. Jackie is a cousin I’ve been in contact with for a long time. Too many names to keep up with, lol.
December 7, 2005 at 7:59 pm #21006This is interesting. I connect with Techteach, she has Meeks connected to her, and you’re connected with Harrises, which is a name I have. Makes you wonder, eh? BTW, the region around Knox County, KY is crawling with Blackfoot ID’s and names some consider to be Saponi. It’s been awhile, but I believe I’ve heard of some families in this locale who did trace back to VA and appear to be connected to Saponi families.

Hello cousin, I was wondering about the Green connection from yours and Dusty’s lines of Greens.
My line of Greens actually come from my husband’s side of the family. His mother’s Greens/Greenes came from WV. Dan’s aunt who did genealogy before she got cancer and passed away, traced the Greens backwards to William Green (great-grandfather), born 1895; to Alfred Green, Sr., born abt. 1840.
Alfred Sr.’s wife was Eva Smith, born abt. 1840; her parents were Abraham Smith, born abt. 1812, and Abraham’s wife was Amy Williamson, born abt. 1814. Amy’s parents were Richard Williamson, born abt. 1786 in Clinch River Valley, Russell Co., VA, and Amy’s mother was Jane “Jenny” Wiley born 1791 in Yadkin Creek, VA. Yes, “that” Jenny Wiley. Jenny’s parents were Thomas Wiley, born abt 1741, Ireland, and Jean “Jenny” Sellards, born abt. 1760 in PA, and died sometime before 1885 in KY.
I did have more notes on the Green/Greene family direct line but somehow, my PAF program lost the information. I had traced the Greens back to a Daniel Greene, from England. I lost from Alfred Green to Daniel Greene.
I have not had the time to research any more – been pretty busy spring cleaning, setting up my own web site (no genealogy in that – yet), taking care of my critters, and trying to start a new home business. When I get some spare time (I’ve forgotten what that is), I will do some more research on Dan’s Green family.
