Hello, everyone. I am looking for some information on some of my family and their ancestors. My grandfather’s name was Albert William Darnell. He was born in Washington County ,VA in 1929. He was full blood Indian. His mother’s name was Lillie A Hall. Her parents were Richard and Rachel Hall. I don’t know Rachel’s maiden name, yet. But what I was told they were all born and raised in VA. I was also told that Lillie was Blackfoot. Her husband Alley was Cherokee. If anyone out there can help me. I’d really appreciate it. If it helps my grandfather had 6 brothers. 2 sisters one named Leona. Who died when she was 21. She was the firstborn and Bertha who is the youngest of all the kids. I don’t know if that helps. But I guess every little bit counts.
May 27, 2005 at 2:18 pm #15028Welcome to our forum. I can tell you that Hall is a name found in VA Indian families. I know of Meherrin/Nanticoke by that name. The Meherrin were neighbors to the Saponi Siouan people I believe the Blackfoot ID is a marker for.
May 27, 2005 at 2:18 pm #15032Welcome to the Forum, Windinherhair.
I located Albert Darnell and his parents Allie (maybe also an “Albert”), b.abt. 1885 Va., and Lillie, b.abt. 1887 Va., on the 1930 Washington Co. VA Census for the North Fork distrist;
as well as Richard Hall, b.abt. 1848 Va, & Rachael Hall, b.abt. 1845 Va., on the 1910 Washington Co. Va., census.
I haven’t found any of them in 1900 yet, so I can only assume that they will be a little difficult to trace so give me some time to work on this.
Bill
p.s….
on the 1930 Washington Co., Va Census, “Allie” and Lillie’s children are listed as:
Fred, 13, b.abt. 1917.
Robert, 9, b.abt. 1921.
ALBERT, 5, b.abt. 1925.*******
Bertha H., 1 + 8 months, or, b.abt. Sept 1928.****
May 27, 2005 at 2:18 pm #15033Cool, Thank you very much for helping me out on this. My mom told me Bertha was younger than my grandpa but I guess she was wrong. Bertha is still alive and sometimes talks to my aunt. My aunt told me it is almost impossible to get Bertha to open up and tell her anything about our ancestors. My mom has told me that Bertha was married to a very abusive white man and that is why she is ashamed and will not speak much of our past. As far as I know of my aunt is still trying to get her to open up. Unfortunately, not with much results.
Thanks again:D
May 27, 2005 at 2:18 pm #15063I edited my last post….
Bertha, at 1 yr & 8 months old in 1930, would have been born about 1928, not 1918 – sorry for the typo.

May 27, 2005 at 2:18 pm #15176Thanks for the info. This is a real big help. Did you perhaps run across Racheal Hall’s maiden name anywhere? Or do you know where I can perhaps look for it at? I really appreciate the help you have given me in this search. There is no words for how grateful I am.
May 27, 2005 at 2:18 pm #15177You’re welcome to any help.
I have no lead on Rachel. Her being born in Tenn and having married someone from Grayson Co Va. with your family story would lead me to think she was from the Johnson, Hancock or Hawkins county area of Tenn. A lot of people moved up and down those “valley highways” on a seasonal basis so it would be difficult to say where she was definitely from without a lot of courthouse digging. The COLE girl living with Richard’s parents in 1870 Grayson County also points to those Tenn. counties.

My gr grandmother’s name was Lillian P. Hall who was married to my gr grandfather (Harris ) who was from Hollister. I have not been able to find anything on the Hall side. Could it be possible that she may have been from VA and only he was born in Hollister? How would I find this out ? They were both born in the early 1800’s. There is no birth certificate to see what their parents names were. I can’t find their death certificates which would list my gr grandmother Lillian’s parents names and her place of birth.

May 27, 2005 at 2:18 pm #15222I was also wondering about another relative on my dad’s side of the family. My dad’s grandmother’s name was Suzy Morgan and she was raised in Lafollette, Tennessee she married a white man name George Shears who was also from Lafollette. My dad told me they ran away together and moved to Pineville Kentucky because George’s parents didn’t want him to be with an Indian woman. I checked the Cherokee rolls to see if she could have been Cherokee. I had no luck there. My grandmother swears that her mother in law was native but she doesn’t know what tribe she could have been. Could she have been a Saponi? I’ve seen somewhere on this site that Morgan was a surname. But I’m not sure.
May 27, 2005 at 2:18 pm #15230Richard Haithcock lists that name as found among Saponi families. He’ll be at the campout, hopefully. He also has a new book for sale of his research. I’ll be posting more info on that shortly.
May 27, 2005 at 2:18 pm #29432Thank you so much for your question, because it may be a lead to some questions I have concerning my g-uncle,Shade Shadrach Banks and his sister,my g-grandma, Annie Sara Banks who are the son and daughter of Sara Sally Hall. My grandfather, Ed Sturgill, said that his grandmother was indian, but I never knew what kind. I see their pics andthey all had thick black hair and dark complexions. They look like they could be shawne or blackfoot. I am like you trying to put the history together.
May 27, 2005 at 2:18 pm #29451Hall/Banks/ Polly: Anyone with any information on any of the Va/KY Hall families. My line starts with Alfred D. Hall. My GG-Grandmother is Sara Sally Hall. Alfred married Roxanna Polly.
May 27, 2005 at 2:18 pm #29454Sturgill’s/Hall’s/ Polly’s : Thank you Linda, I am looking forward to reading that book. The Halls, Pollys, and Sturgills started out in Grayson Co. Va and migrated to SE Kentucky. Francis Sturgill, Sr., David Sturgill, Solomon Sturgill, and Francis, Jr. were said to have been of cherokee ancestry. Any relative out there with any information on this family I would appreciate it.

Also I have seen my Great Grandmother Annie Banks and my Papaw Ed Sturgill and they definitely look like they lived off of the tribe (they did not) but look like it.
