Hello everyone,
I think that I have found some link to the Booker family with the Nanticoke tribe as when i went to their site they were looking for some family members and one family name that was listed was the Booker family who were from the same part of Virginia and had the a triracial ancestor listed who had a simular triracial background as my booker line but I think that mabe my Booker line was probably mixed with saponi and have some relations with the Nanticoke tribe and are close relations with the ones listed as my father’s family clearly remember full blood indian relatives of my grandfather who were his aunts and uncles and his cousins as well as his black relatives and know his distant white relatives as well . However I am not sure if he is a direct descendent of the ancestor listed with the Nanticoke Booker family.(from Va.)(My Booker line also said to have some West Indian connection and to have originated from London England along with the White Bookers with whom my Booker line heve mixed with)
Still no info on the Cheeks line except that I question the english name of Mary given to my grandfather’s mother for there is no last name given to her and the lat name of Cheeks give to my grandfather since although his father was white there is no father listed on any records of him .
Could the fact that Mary is the only name listed for my ggrandmother mean that she was a full blood indian instead of being half black and half indian and could this mean that mabe since my grandfather called himself black and he claimed that Mary’s father was a former slave and was black could he carry the name of Cheeks and have been a step-father of Mary instead of her biological father ? On all records of my grandfather and Mary all other people in the town both black and white have both first and last names given Mary is the only one with no last name. (from Norlina NC.)
My grandmother Minnie Gibson was most probably full or mostly indian and from South Carolina and my James line were Black probably from the Gullah Island of James who were said that the ancestor Erving James purchased land from the Cherokee and founded the town Jamestown S.C. which is still owned by all of the decendents of him He and his descendents were also reproted to have intermarried into the Cherokee tribe but no connection was found . I do know that his wife’s name was Nora and that she had a sister but do not know her racial identity .
My Wright line was said to also be a mixture of mostly Native and African blood but with a little White blood mixed in. I was told that they may have come from North Carolina but my ggrandfather who was the Wright in question was from South Carolina.
Still no info on Quinnie Pitts my grandmother who was the daughter of Mela G. and William Pitts or the origin of either Mela G. or William Pitts .
Mela G. was a full blood indian mixed tribally and William Pitts was white possibally of a family of slave owners from the West Indies. (Quinnie Pitts from Anne Arundle County Maryland)
Any Info will be welcomed
thank you

May 25, 2007 at 6:00 am #26606If it’s of any relevance, the Cheek family were big in Nashville at least from the mid-19th century. I think they owned the Maxwell House brand, and maybe also the Nashville hotel for which the coffee is named. Their 1920-ish mansion, Cheekwood, was for many years the Tennessee Fine Arts Center, but I believe there’s a newer one now. Fifty years ago I knew John Cheek (of that family), who taught at Vanderbilt, but I don’t know if he was part Saponi. And he didn’t know if I was, for that matter.
May 25, 2007 at 6:00 am #26633Tia,
may I ask for the names in your Wright lines? My line of Wrights came from Wayne Co., KY. Before that, Amherst and Stafford Co., VA; then before that, Amherst, Westmoreland Cos in VA, then before that, Middlesex and Lancaster Counties in VA. My Wrights married into Pryor, Hill, Edwards, Hawkins, Ellis, Peyton/Payton, Calhoun, then Meeks. I wrote in another topic chain that I have no info on my Hiram Meek(s), but found a Hiram MEEK that was the grandson of a Nez Perce chief named “Thunder Eyes.” I don’t know if my Hiram Meek(s) and this Hiram Meek are one and the same person.

May 25, 2007 at 6:00 am #27616I have a line of Wright’s coming from the Randolth, NC into Fentress Co., TN around the 1800’s. The names I have are Rachel, Malinda, Susan and Wilson Wright. Their parent’s were as far as I can tell was Joshua F Wright and Sarah Lamar. Rachel married James B. Oakes and moved to Arkansas then to Missouri. One of their children was named Mahala which I know is Native. Would you know much about this line?

May 25, 2007 at 6:00 am #27617After looking over my records Rachel Wright doesn’t belong to Joshua and Sarah. I haven’t been able to figure out her parent’s.

If I may wander off topic a little, could you share a little more about that? Might even be a good topic for a separate thread.
Meanwhile, it may be irrelevant, but the vice-chief of the Cheroenhaka is named Wright. Stood out to me because it’s one of my family names, but not one I know much about yet.

the Mahala name seems familiar to me in my Wright line but I don’t no why mabe she was one of the female children my ggrandmother had who did not survive but she was most probably named after another family member.

Hey Tia,
I just found a couple of archive Cds that were hiding. In it are some marriage indexes for NC (1728-1850). I found 3 Cheeks in Warren County, but there are 30 Cheek marriages in Orange County, NC on this CD. Did you have any people there? I accidentally noticed a few in Bedford Co, VA, as well.
Is Robert T. Cheek (Warren Co) your guy? Married Mary H. Alston?

I am not sure since there are conflicting stories about weather Mary was married to a Cheek/Cheeks or weather it was more of an affair what seems to be consistent is that Mary was a domestic of whoever was my grandfather’s Father but i not even sure if the man who father my grandfather was even a cheeks or if it was just Mary’s family name or if she picked that name . On my grandfather’s birthcertificate it only list a Mary as mother father’s name listed as unknown and M
Mary does not have a last name this is also consistent with the census record i have found around 1906 that only list her as Mary no last name . I have recently found out that she is of Cherokee ancestory would this account for the lack of a last name?
My grandfather did have a brother but ut no one knows anything about him since he separated from my grandfather when they were kids and my grandfather’s sister was named Cora but it was thought that her father was Black like my grandfather’s brother but i do know that my grandfather’s father was White and most likely had some money . My grandfather looked distinctly different from his other siblings he was very light skined and could pass for White while it was said that his brother was dark skined and looked black and his sister looked more NA . My mother told me before she passed that all three had different fathers bu they all had the surname of Cheeks. and Mary died when they were all very young so that is all of the oral history that i have recieved other that that they were raised by an uncle until they reached their early teens and were kicked out of the house because of the Great Depression .
So not even sure that Cheeks was the name of their uncle who raised them ?
If Mary was half Cherokee and Half Black (father) would she have had a surname and if she was a full blood Cherokee would that explain the lack of one and could her mother had married a Black man named Cheeks and Mary gave the Cheeks name of her stepfather to her children?
May 25, 2007 at 6:00 am #28184hello Sammarroq
Thanks for this info since i have been here i have learned that if Mela was a Dark skinned NA woman but since MD did not reconize any NA’s within the state and teh fact that her husband at the time John Jackson was AA. she and all of her children would also be listed as AA. Is there any way to recover older records on Mela that were distroyed in the fire in Annapolis to learn more about her possible tribal info or about William Pitts I know that he was White possible from the west indies?
