May 25, 2007 at 6:00 am #32013Hello everyone
Can i look up info on Mary in Warren and Halifax courthouses online or do I need to go there ?
May 25, 2007 at 6:00 am #32014You of course know , will have to have information with other names to simply identify a Mary in any records. I would suggest if there are any significant records on her based on dates , events, and any civil or social activities that would require records in the court houses, such as marriages, births, deaths, estates, etc. you will need to inquire and research the individual Court House records and inquire as to what types of records may be found there. As Linda has said earlier there would be a high possibility of her connection to the Haliwa community which would have been long before their tribal recognition in later years by the state. If there are any records available on the internet it would seem likely they would be in one of the internet genealogy websites which usually require subscribtion. I am referring to Ancestry.com and something like that. I have found additional information in the last year when Virginia based information became available in their vast numbers of special records or state or county based historical preservation programs.
As to contacting someone about Mary’s relationship to any family known now as Haliwa/Saponi in Halifax/Warren counties I would google for Haliwa/Saponi and see if that pulls up a home site and then make connection by phone and email. Nothing beats a failure but a try and I sure hope you have success in your search. If anyone on the forum can be of help you know where to contact and what to ask. Ed

Thanks for this info since i have been here i have learned that if Mela was a Dark skinned NA woman but since MD did not reconize any NA’s within the state and teh fact that her husband at the time John Jackson was AA. she and all of her children would also be listed as AA. Is there any way to recover older records on Mela that were distroyed in the fire in Annapolis to learn more about her possible tribal info or about William Pitts I know that he was White possible from the west indies?
Hello,
Linda or Techteach and maybe others here would better know how to locate and obtain these records. You may want to email them 🙂 Best of luck finding
these.

May 25, 2007 at 6:00 am #32156I hate to say this, but at the risk of sounding like I am avoiding a job, I really do not know how to find this information. There are a couple of yahoo groups I subscribe to that deal in genealogy of MD and DE: Mitsawokett (you can google their site and join there, I think) and lower-delmarva-roots that might be helpful.

My aunt uncle who are both my mother’s siblings told me that my grandmother Mary was indeed a Sioux Na so i googled the Haliwa-Saponi site and gave that info to them . They really want to find out info on their father’s family as they know nothing about his childhood for my grandFather would not talk much about it and the whole family also would like to know if we have any relatives we could meet and learn about our family history.
The info really help a lot thanks.
