Is Norlina NC in Warren Co. or Orange Co. NC? I only know the town not the county of my grandfather’s birth.
May 25, 2007 at 6:00 am #28371Hi Tia,
putting Norlina North Carolina in exact phase on Google Advanced Search and County in with all of the words, it shows Norlina to be in Warren County. Good luck to you.
May 25, 2007 at 6:00 am #28572Hi everyone
Thanks everyone for the info . I was wandering if i could find out who Mary was working for when she had my grandfather William Cheeks and if those records would show either Mary’s last name and/or her race? I was told that she worked for my GGrand father in some way. (probably as a domestic?)
Mary was the NA. and my GGrandfather was White.
May 25, 2007 at 6:00 am #28583Hi Folks, Norlina is in North Carolina and just a few miles from Warrenton, county seat for Warren County. About 10 to 15 miles out of Warrenton you should be seeing homes of the Haliwa-Saponi and if you continue out Hwy 43 you wil come to their tribal officies and grounds. Wonderful People here ! I pastored the Reedy Creek Bapt. Church just off 43 and we knew many of these folk as friends. Their present name is a combination of Halifax county and Warren county thus Haliwa-Saponi. Norlina is right on old US 1 going north out of Henderson, NC and on into Virginia after it passes through the little village of Wise, NC. Ed

May 25, 2007 at 6:00 am #29357Hi everyone
Happy new year
My aunt just told me that My grandfather’s mother was Native and that she came from an indian town outside or near Norlina N.C.
So is Warrenton the only town with a high native pop thats near Norlina or are there other Native towns nearby as well ?
thanks again
tia
May 25, 2007 at 6:00 am #29358My impression is that there are a lot of Haliwa people living throughout the county. It’s very rural, so it may be best to think in terms of county, not specific town. If your family was Indian living in Warren county then it’s pretty unlikely that Indian blood would be anything but Haliwa. What were the names in that line?
They have their annual pow wow I think in the spring. Why don’t you try to come down one year and see what’s up?
May 25, 2007 at 6:00 am #29359Just to add, the Haliwa Saponi pow-wow is scheduled for April 12-13 this year.
Tia, are you referring to the Cheeks side or different surname?
May 25, 2007 at 6:00 am #29362Tianicwanga,
Could you share some names in regards to your family. I know there are those who are very familiar with that area on this forum and I pastored in that area for 5 years. The “Haliwa-Saponi” community is separated from Norlina by the county seat of Warrenton. There are many little communities out there in their area such as Essex, Arcola, Hollister(almost in the middle of this area and so many more). I am sure some of us would recognize family names from that area so just fire away and I think you will get some answers.

May 25, 2007 at 6:00 am #29407Hi Beeleaf,
Yes I am refering to the Cheeks side .
May 25, 2007 at 6:00 am #29408Hi Ed
The only names that i know are that of my grandfather William Henry Cheeks, his sister Cora not sure if she had the same sir name or father and William Henry’s mother Mary sir name and native name unknown. Also william had a brother but do not know the name None of my mother’s siblings know any more that this except that Mary was a full blood native and from an indian villege or town outside or near Norlina. Mary died before her children were old enough to know her and they were raised by someone whom they called their uncle his name is also unknown . my Mother’s name was Betty and one of her sister’s name was Edith .

May 25, 2007 at 6:00 am #29729Hello Everyone
Hi Ed Yancey ,
I have a question for you how early or how long did the Haliwa-Saponi have sir names ? Mary did not have one on any record she is listed on.
May 25, 2007 at 6:00 am #29731I would think the surnames go a long way back. Oftentimes women’s maiden names of all nationalities were never recorded.
May 25, 2007 at 6:00 am #29738It is as Linda just shared, many times the woman’s maiden name may not be listed. My GGreat grandparents on my Grandmother’s side are listed on the information on the marriage bond for my Great Grandparents simply as John and E A Fitts. When you are dealing with these old records or for that fact present day records mistakes are made. We have discovered at later times her initials are really F A and her maiden name was Smith. It just happened other written records came to light to enable this information to be known and confirmed, so the search never ends. I think you will need to do some real searching in the Warren County and Halifax County records which means time and great effort. Do not take for granted your present records for later information including your own birth or marriage is totally correct. When I needed my birth information about 10 yrs. ago we discovered my first name was wrong. Even though my drivers license and selective service cards were right we had to go to the County School office and get confirmation that I attended school for 12 years as Woodrow Edward Yancey and not Woodson ! To add insult to injury we had to pay to have it corrected when it was some one elses fault. In looking up recent records through Ancestry.com I just discovered the North Carolina has on my birth information that I am the son of Woodson Wilson Yancey rather than Woodrow. Should I change that also? All of this simply says the records are only as good as the person entering the information but even with those errors and with other information one can through a process of deduction identify me and my father. You have to be dilligent, use your ability to reason and think out what you are actually reading. There are numerous names in my personal records especially in the 1600 and 1700’s that have no maiden name as regard to the woman but may have the given name. There are also quite a few that have no spouse when it comes to the woman and that name might not ever be known. I wish you well in your hunting and as it would seem likely the area you are really looking at is in that Holister, Essex and a few more small communities you will need to explore both Warren and Halifax courthouses. Good luck, Ed
