November 13, 2008 at 9:33 pm #32621Welcome, Three Bears.
I have an elusive Elizabeth Smith, born in VA ca. 1792, married in Ross County, Ohio, 1816. She was later in Sullivan County, Indiana ca. 1820 a county over from the location of the Blackfoot Church we have posts about. You can find that by using our search feature for the term ‘Blackfoot Church.”
She had two daughters in Indiana who married two brothers in Wabash, IL, one my Thomas Harris, whose son is pictured on this page, http://www.saponitown.com/Blackfoot.htm.
I didn’t realize that Ross County is where Chillicothe is. Richard Haithcock has so much research on that county. I need to take another look at that.

…do you have any other history on your Smith’s? Like where they lived before Ohio?
I have Smith’s (married into my Crawfords), but they are early VA…Elizabeth b. 1665 Hanover…her f. George b. 1647 Hanover…his f. John N. Smith b. 1585 Snowden, Wales

November 13, 2008 at 9:33 pm #32626Are they connected, or is just coincidental to have so many?
November 13, 2008 at 9:33 pm #32627You know, Bird is another possibly Saponi name. Stewart and Hall are in a lot of Va/NC Indian families.
November 13, 2008 at 9:33 pm #32628Hi ,
I have over 14,000 names in my files , all related to me . Lot of native American blood from many tribes also . I guess I am hooked on doing genealogy !

November 13, 2008 at 9:33 pm #32640Ross County is in my neck of the woods. Will dig out the big book (History of Ross Co.) I have on the county and see if anything is in there. Actually, it was sitting on the bookshelf. Just looked and the book has a slew of names with the surname Smith. Will take a bit of looking through it, will get back to you asap.

November 13, 2008 at 9:33 pm #32654In Daviess co Ky by Henderson co Ky right on the Indiana line south of Evansville In was Smith’s Ferry on the Ohio river. This Smith family with various Moses Smith males, was shown in a deed of Charles Allen of Franklin co Ky to his grandchildren in 1822. Charles is the brother of my Memucan Allen and Charles’ daughter married Moses Smith. This Smith family came out of Caswell co NC. Included in the deed was 200 acres of the land of a William B Smith including the ferry known as Smith’s Ferry and it said “on which Moses Smith now lives.” In the deed Charles Allen lists his grandchildren as Allen S. Smith, Wm. C, James L, Sarah Ann, Mary “Polly” and Frances (Fanny). There were more children born after this deed. One was Memucan Smith. Don’t know if this family is connected to anyone here except this northern part of Ky is not far from that Blackfoot church either. More to come. Saj
November 13, 2008 at 9:33 pm #32677My Smiths migrated up from the Piedmont with the Quaker ‘Moon Colony’ to Ohio. My brickwall is going back from Francis Smith from W.V. or N. C.(1777/1779-1865) and his wife Mercy ‘Massa’ Jones from Franklin, Ohio(1781-1877). From strong family stories these people were Balckfoot/Sioux.

Sue this could very well be some of my Smith’s. I brought back my original topic and added some to it. See if my Moses Smith isn’t the same one you mentioned with the Ferry. It has been said that the Smith’s were NDN. I have more info at home somewhere.
