Hey Threebears, Hi and welcome~good to see you here, as I believe we have family ties. What part of WV are you in?~ I am in Indiana, but most of my ancestry comes from VA & WV. Getting ready for Thanksgiving? What Indian tribes do you have ties to? Mine are Patawomecke and possibly Powhatan, but I believe there are many more and I have alot of searching ahead of me. Blessings Cuz~:D Greydove~^~

November 13, 2008 at 9:33 pm #32735Hi Cuz, Now I’m going to have to look at the map again! How far is that from Nicholas Co WV? I’d like to take a trip out to VA & WVA to back~track my roots sometime. I thought about taking the train, though, I doubt now if it would be before next Spring~early Summer. I’d like to plan it around some Pow~Wows, too. We probably have more than one blood~tie and your Indian blood~lines are some of what I figured were mine, but like I said, I’ve got a whole lot more to search for. Looks like you have done alot of research. Well, time to call it a day so I’ll be talking to ya 3Bears~:)~Later~Greydove~^~
November 13, 2008 at 9:33 pm #32774Not certain if or how this may apply but…in my maternal Nichols line I have a WM Smith connection as such: my great grandaunt Ella Nichols (b: 1861 OH, d: bet 1903-1924 prob. OH; dau/of: Wm. S. Nichols & Nancy nee Thompson) had a son with an UNK Smith male…said son was named William H. Smith, he was b: abt 1877 in OH and I suspect his father was also named William but I cannot prove it as such…irreguardless…this young son, Wm H. Smith appears on a census in 1880 as follows:
(Wilmington, Clinton Co, OH)1880
Nancy NICHOLS Self W Female W 34 NC Keeping House NC NC
Rebecca NICHOLS Dau S Female W 18 OH At Home OH NC
John W. NICHOLS Son S Male W 14 OH At School OH NC
James NICHOLS Son S Male W 13 OH At School OH NC
Franklin NICHOLS Son S Male W 11 OH At School OH NC
Anna NICHOLS Dau S Female W 9 OH At School OH NC
Mamie NICHOLS Dau S Female W 7 OH At School OH NC
Thomas NICHOLS Son S Male W 3 OH At Home OH NC
Ella SMITH Dau M Female W 19 OH Servant OH OH
Wm. H. SMITH GSon S Male W 3 OH At Home OH OH ******
This may be the same Wm. Smith who registered for WWI as follows:
WILL Smith, age 41, DOB: 7 Nov 1876 W, Nat Born, Farming for self, res: Wilmington, Clinton Co, OH, near rel: Mamie P. Smith, signed name as Will Smith, med build & height, blue eyes, LB (light brown?) hair, reg on 12 Sept 1918.
and he may be one and the same as this fellow on later census records in the same county: Clinton, here in OH:
above individual: shows in union twp, clinton co, oh in 1920 as will w/ wife minnie and 20 yo dau vera; in 1910 they are in Liberty Twp, Clinton Co, OH as Will and Minnie P. w/dau Vera L (11)…shown as M1 for 12 yrs;
I have no knowledge of exactly who this Wm’s father was nor when exactly his mother died or where…I know that Ella was alive when her father William Nichols was executed in 1904…and that she preceeded her mother Nancy in death as Nancy’s DOD was in 1924 and makes no mention of this daughter as being a surviving child. Nancy moved to KY after 1904 and died there but likely Ella and her son Wm remained in OH. Any further info would be greatly appreciated. Blessings and best of luck ~~~~Laurie
November 13, 2008 at 9:33 pm #32775Hi Laurie & Threebears~ Don’t know if you’ve seen this but this link on OhioGenWeb~Smith is an archive of Smiths of Ohio and has over 5,000 links~ I looked thru some, but, its going to take a while to sift thru. I hope it helps you some~ Later~Greydove~^~ http://www.jrank.org/api/search/v2?key=5ea91a27edd0b9dd78f87e5ba77e94c50b551e6d&q=Smith&start=0

C.(1777/1779-1865) and his wife Mercy ‘Massa’ Jones from Franklin, Ohio(1781-1877). From strong family stories these people were Blackfoot.
These Smiths came from WV (late 1700s) to Clinton Co Ohio 1810s-1840s. Then Randolph Co IN abt 1847. Including Dora Moses Cornelius Skinner Smith.
Pontius/Bayley of Ross Co Ohio are another Blackfoot line. The Bayley line moves to Grant Co Indiana after Ohio.
Other Smiths from this line moved on to KS and MO.
November 13, 2008 at 9:33 pm #36763I think I posted my Smiths elsewhere on the forum also, but Smith is a line I have 3(?) times.
Being a common name, no wonder, but maybe we can find connections here.
Most of my lines came through OH or KY from PA or VA.
Not to mention, they are all 3 on my mothers side, who has claimed to have NA on both
her mom and dads side, as well Pennsylvania Dutch and Irish on her dads. Ive yet to
find these NA connections, but my mom looks more NA than either of her parents.
Please forgive my rabbit trails… (My Blackfoot line is on my dads side btw)
Grandpas line:::
Mom: Lulu L Smith b.1889 OH
to Thomas Jefferson Smith b.1850 Paulding co. OH and Amelia Moser b.1853 Paulding OH.
One Ancestry tree lists Amelias parents as John Mosier or Mouser and Kathrine Smith. Also a conflicting parentage for
Thomas such as a John or Thomas from PA and Susan or Experience for moms.
Grandmas line:::
her g grandma Elizabeth Ann Smith b.1835 (Kosciusko?) IN, to Rev. Joel Rogers Smith b.1810 Montour co PA,
and Hannah Adams b. 1813 Montour PA. Elizabeth marries John Porter b.1829 OH.
