Vance, Stacey.23, Cheekis and all. I don’t always get a lot of time to read the GREAT history stuff. But I just took the time to read all 15 previous posts on this page. What a great bunch of History. Thanks, to all of you. I’m going to print this page out for my “Histories” notebook I’m putting together. (It’ll help me when I’m trying to track my families ancestors….:D 😀 😀
December 11, 2004 at 3:14 pm #14983These places, such as the original Chillicothe (Oldtown), are just up the road from me. There are monuments sat on both sides of present State Route 68 that if you are not looking for them you can easily miss.
There is quite a bit of Shawnee history near to me. Here in Wilmington, just this past summer, a plaque was placed in the park that tells of the man trails that were used by Native Americans that follow alot of the present roadways here in the city.
As I mentioned in my first post, my family history traces back to both Chief Cornstalk and BlueJacket.
I have yet to see Allan Eckert’s “BlueJacket” drama, but I have seen “Tecumseh” and it was a very good show.
What is interesting is that my ancestral families fought with and against Chief Cornstalk at the Battle of Point Pleasant.
For those curious, this all has to do with my maternal side of the family. Research is easiest on this side because it was better documented. My paternal side is more of a ‘Needle In The Haystack” variety. My mother hails from Wayne County W.V.
This is a definitely interesting thread.
December 11, 2004 at 3:14 pm #15005Hi!
I can’t resist. My daughter has done alot of acting and about four years ago played an Indian woman in Tecumseh. We rented a pop-up camper and stayed at a campground there for a week. Had a swimming pond-1/2 fishing pond but can’t remember the name of the campground now. Very pretty country, kind of hilly. Saw the sights, the museum and mounds near there. The following spring they called her and asked her to come back but she had already signed a contract at the Red Barn Theatre. Small world isn’t it? Sue J
December 11, 2004 at 3:14 pm #15010Yes it is a small world. I saw the show during their anniversary in 1998.
Not sure if you visited these places or not, but not too far from me is “The Great Serpent Mound”, and the mounds around Fort Ancient. If you haven’t and ever make it this way again, you might enjoy checking these sites out. The moundbuilders seemed to have had a field day around here. Some mounds do not even appear to be known about, but I have heard there are more around these parts than are accounted for.
It’s all ‘hilly’ around most places here. Especially in the southern parts of Ohio.
December 11, 2004 at 3:14 pm #32334I know the Gore Family on the Shawnee Census. Having a NA Gore ggmo, I researched Sally Gore some years back. Her maiden name was Bluejacket and she married John Gore from Bullitt Co., KY. Bluejacket, OK is named from this Shawnee Family. There are records of Will Rogers stating he dated one of John and Sally Gore’s daughter but he married someone else. Just some tidbits that I remember from my research on the Bluejackets/Gores. Some of the families on the Shawnee Census are a percentage of Anglo. Clydene
