Note from Becky: I would contact Amber Richardson for parking directions if you plan to attend. We danced this one last year and had a good time. The big oak trees provided lots of shade. There were several vendors and they treated the dancers well. We had snacks, water available, day money, t-shirts, and a big meal catered for supper.

I have had the opportunity to speak with Chief Jim Wilson about a possible pow wow or gathering the weekend following his Strong Sun pow wow. As soon as I get any details, I will post them on here.
There will not be a pow wow in Bland this year. They are hoping to have one at the village after Wolf Creek village is totally reconstructed and up and running.
Really enjoyed NCSSM powwow this past weekend…smaller gathering, but still a good turnout. It was good to see Buffalowmn…and congrats to her and her fiancee. There were a lot of dancers, seven vendors, two food vendors. My granddaughter, Maecyn, really enjoyed dancing and hearing the six drums. The feast was a good end to the day….we were exhausted but had a really good time.

Store Road but am not sure where that is. I am looking for the small campground in Hollister that we found last year. We live in Nashville, NC and will be going to the powwow.

The Haliwa Saponi Powwow is this weekend, April 15-17.
Hollister, NC
On April 15 – 17th, 2011 the Haliwa-Saponi Indian Tribe of Hollister, North Carolina will celebrate our 46th Annual Powwow. The Haliwa-Saponi Tribe is the third largest tribe in the state of North Carolina with close to 4, 000 enrolled members. The powwow is held in commemoration of the Tribes State Tribal recognition by the NC General Assembly in 1965. The theme for this years powwow is “Honoring Our Elders – Looking Back and Moving Forward”. The powwow will be held at the Haliwa-Saponi Tribal Charter school located at 130 Haliwa-Saponi Trail, Hollister NC 27589 in the Bethlehem Community of Hollister. The celebration will begin on Friday April 15th at 7:00 PM and will conclude at sundown on Sunday April 17th. Friday night will include a fireside ceremony and a welcome by Chief Ronald Richardson. Saturday gates will open at 10:00 am and will begin with the Grand Entry at 12:00 noon. Sunday will start with community worship service at 9:00 am on the powwow grounds, gates will open at 11:00 am. The powwow will be emceed Sandon Jacobs. Tribal Chairman Dr. Joe Richardson and Tribal Chief Ronald Richardson will be presiding over the powwow activities. The host drum is Red Earth of the Haliwa-Saponi Tribe. Head dancers are Josh Richardson and Amy Hewlin. Jr. Head dancers will be Garrett Silver and Ms. Haliwa-Saponi 2011 – 2012, Ms. Danielle Leonard. The powwow will include traditional American Indian food and crafts for sale. Dance competition will be in effect with dancers of many styles of American Indian dance and regalia to include Northern Traditional, Southern Straight, Traditional, Fancy, Grass and several specialty dances to name a few. There will be a juried American Indian art contest on Saturday April 16th. Admission is Six and under – free; ages 7 -61 – $6.00; age 62 and over – $5.00. The public is welcome to attend the oldest and largest powwow in the state of North Carolina.

We attended the Alberta powwow at the SVCC…it was a really good one. There were quite a few vendors, good BBQ and the weather really cooperated. There were two drums, Red Earth and Youngtanund. The dancers were treated to lunch in the air conditioned building. This is one to put on the books for next year…it was easy to find and good parking.
It was good to see both Linda and Richard Haithcock at the Alberta powwow, too.
We are planning to go to Clarksville this weekend. Hoping some of our family will make it up there as well. Due to the gas prices we have been staying pretty close to home this powwow season.
19th Annual Monacan Powwow started today and will run through Sunday,the 23rd.
Located at Elon,VA,approx 6 miles west of US 29 on VA 130,Amherst CO,VA.
I plan to be there tomorrow.
