Everyone,
You must order NATF Forn 83 for each file that you request.
Write a letter to request forms to: (as many as you need)
Old Military and Civil Records (NWCTB)
Textual Archives Services Division
National Archives and Records Administration
700 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20408-0001
After you receive your forms the instructions will be attached. Each file/request is $17.50.
You can also go here
http://www.archives.gov/research/arc/native-americans-guion-miller.html
to find your names and the roll #’s
Good Luck,
Valerie
March 1, 2007 at 3:18 pm #25832Thank you for the detailed instructions.
What did you find out about your Anderson Cole Eastern Cherokee Application?
March 1, 2007 at 3:18 pm #25833I am having a problem uploading the Anderson Cole files. It seems that my files are to large. Can someone tell me what to do. It is to much to retype.
Thanks
Val
March 1, 2007 at 3:18 pm #25835I think you could right click the file on your computer & check the file size. If it’s under 100 KB (anything MB would be over). You could copy and paste in Word and break the file into smaller ones if it’s more than 100 KB. I think it might work to:
click “manage attachments” at the bottom of the post page, then
click “browse” button to the right of “Upload Files From Your Computer”
go through and find it as it comes up, then
click “Upload” and watch the middle message box to see when it is done.
It doesn’t show up under Preview Post but does when you click Submit Reply.

Hello Dianne….I too have sent away to recieve numerous ECA’s and other documents via NARA…it is relatively easy to do but time is of the essence as it appears that they will very soon be increasing their prices for all of their documents. You can DL the forms from online or call or snail mail them to order the proper forms…the form to recieve an Eastern Cherokee Application is called the NATF Form 83…the fee I paid for each was $17.50 and you must have the person’s name/s and their ECA number…you can email NARA to recieve copies of the form by emailing them at: inquire@nara.gov or you can snail mail them at: Old Military and Civil Records (NWCTB) , Textual Archives Division, National Archives and Records Administration, 700 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, D.C. 20408-0001. You DO NOT send payment with the form once you recieve it, fill it out and mail it…they have a link where you can check on the status of your order and once they retrieve or locate the form, they will contact you for payment. Same goes for obtainign copies of old Civil War pension files and records…and the price for the entire file for war service is expected to go WAY up…from currently $37.00 for a full pension and land warrant and service file to an expected $125.00 EACH! The form for obtaining military files is form NATF 85. I highly recommend ordering any you wish to have NOW. On average it takes about 60 days to recieve a ECA once they recieve your request…for a full military pensioner’s file it takes a bit longer…about 120 days but varies depending on the number of requests they have. I just recently myself ordered 3 more full pensioner’s files and 5 ECA’s…and am awaiting recieving those. DO check with others in yoru lines to discern who has ordered what…I’d hate to see anyoen order a duplicate if someone else already has it. As an FYI…the ECA’s I ordered are for the following maternal ancestors of mine:
1. Eliza (Bowman) Cole
2. Logan Nichols
3. Nancy Jane (Gibson) Nichols
4. Louisa (Gibson) Perkins
5. Flora (Gibson) Nichols
The soldier’s files I sent away for are from my paternal lines and are for:
1. Elijah Beeman
2. Harvey Whitacre
3. George Washington Sellars.
I already have copies of the following ECA’s:
1. Newton Pee Nichols
2. Hayden Nichols
3. Dicey Nichols
4. Savory Joe “Jo” Nichols
5. Lawson “Los” Nichols
6. Sherman Nichols
I also have some transcriptions of a few other ECA’s that don’t coem to mind of the top of my head at the moment…feel free to email me your “short” list if you wish to inquire/order…I’ll gladly post if I am aware of anyone else having a copy of it on any of the Myfamily.com sites I belong to.
Take great care…hope to learn more soon…and by all means, post what YOU have by way of applications etc…there is NO sense in others paying for data that someone else already has in their possession. Blessings~~~Laurie

Hey Val…do let me know if you cannot copy and paste the file here…I have a copy of a transcription of Anderson’s ECA that I can post. Wish I knew you were ordering it…althought, it is oft times right nice to have the actual paper file with signatures and fingerprints on it as well. Take care~~~Laurie
March 1, 2007 at 3:18 pm #25839I just checked my files at MY site at Myfamily.com and noted that I also have either a transcription copy or teh actual ECA;s for these additional ancestors:
1. Kizziah Gibson
2. Ruben Mullins
3. Nancy Elizabeth Gibson
4. Polly Ann Nichols
5. Candy Nichols
Blessings~~~Laurie
March 1, 2007 at 3:18 pm #25840Laurie,
Thanks for all the info. What does ECA stand for?
Dianne
March 1, 2007 at 3:18 pm #25841Hello everyone….to reply to Dianne’s Q fisrt: ECA = Eastern Cherokee Application. *grin* sorry girl for the lingo tossing.
Also have the following ECA’s or transcriptions in my files:
1. Jahazy/a Cole
2. Shepherd Cole
3. Wallis Cole
4. Alonzo Cole (and minor CH)
5. Jesse Cole (and minor CH)
6. Chester A. Cole
7. Elbert Cole
The remaining one’s I have are deep in my FTM files so that will take some serious hunting to locate and list them all here. I’ll gladly take a peek for anyone if you share my ancestral tree/names…just message me here or email me. If any seem particularly pertinent to this forum I can post then or send a shared file…those that are actual scanned copies from the originals are largish files…the transcriptions are nice but take up less space and not all have been transcribed by myself or others who shared them with me/my family. I’d greatly appreciate it if anyone else who comes here and has other ECA’s, if they too coudl list those that they have in their possession so that duplications do not occur….at (now price) of $17.50 each…it can get to be very costly. Blessings~~~Laurie

Anderson Cole, being duly sworn and examind, deposes says:
My name is Anderson Cole: I was born in Know Co., Ky in 1833: I claim my Indian blood thru my father. I make no claim thru my mother: she was of dutch and French Descent: my father was born in N.C. in 1827; my father died in 1862. I think it was in Buncombe C. in 1787: my father died in 1862. My father claimed his Cherokee Indian blood thru both his father and mother; I think my grandmother’s maiden name was Cuzzie Anderson. I never saw the grandparents thru whom I claim: My grandmother thru whom I claim died before I was born so I have been told. I don’t know when my grandfather died. He died in Lawrence Co. Ky,.
I am unable to trace my Cherokee ancestry back farther than my grandparents.
I have an older sister who if living at the present time would be over a hundred years old. She was born in Lee Co. Va.
In 1835 I think my grandfather lived in Lawrence Co. Ky. my grandfather came to Kentucky from Tenn before I was born.
In 1835 I think my father and I lived in Lee Co, Va. In 1851 I think my grandfather was dead. In 1851 my father and I lived in Lee Co. Va.
I heard that my father and I lived with the Cherokees as members of the tribe. At the time of my birth 1855 neither my father or grandfather lived with the Cherokees.
None of the Ancestors thru whom I claim were ever held in bondage. None of the ancestors thru whom I claim were ever enrolled. none ever received any money or land as an Indian. None of my relatives ever went to the Indian Territory and received land there as an Indian.
Each of the grandparents thru whom I claim were three quarter Cherokee. My father was always a voter. I have always been regarded in the community in which I lived as being of Cherokee and white parentage.

*Note: transcription generously provided to me by cousin Irene Cole and was apparently transcribed by another Cole cousin. My tree reflects that Anderson also went by the name of William Anderson Cole. Furthermore, I wonder about his maternity…as his siblings, Chaney (born 1832) and Mariah (born 1816) also filed (or had children file) an ECA and their mother was Katy nee Gibson.

March 1, 2007 at 3:18 pm #25847I know you knew before requesting the records, were they accepted or denied? I’ve seen where they give the reason for denial.
Thank you for sharing, Laurie and Mystic.
March 1, 2007 at 3:18 pm #25848Dianne…it has been my experience thus far that all of the claims were denied…the vast majority due to a “reason code” such as/similar to the following example from Sherman Nichols’ ECA which was rejected and states: “Cousin of #16346 and claims through same ancestor”. Jo Nichols’ ECA has the exact same rejection comment as does Hayden Nichols’ and Dicey Nichols’ and too Newton P. Nichols’. It is my understanding that if ANYONE else from that same line/family applied before them then they would be met with rejection from the court of claims office….which strikes me as bogus and unsettling but who am I to say how things should have worked back then?! I personally have not seen an applications rejected because a person was deemed NON Native American but I hear tell it has happened before…I have also heard of other’s beign rejected because they were not members of the exact tribe that they reportedly were a part of…meaning that perhaps they were not Cherokee but soem other tribe such as Creek or such. Perhaps someone else on board can better answer to the exactitudes of rejection reasons etc…thsu far I have only seen the “cousindry” rejections for those in my lines. Hope this answered your Q’s…LOL. Take care~~~Laurie
